This study explores the articles relevant to Jeodae[大笒] included in Joseon(朝鮮) Music, a music magazine and Joseon Art, a comprehensive art magazine published in North Korea from 1950s to 1960s, in order to figure out various discussions on Jeodae in North Korea in the period. The articles involve how this instrument had been modernized as well as its musical characteristics and performance properties. Through the investigation into these articles the study finds out arguments on the presevation and modern inheritance of Jeodae inside North Korea. The findings are as the following : Firstly, Jeodae, with elegant and soft timbre, acoustically features in its deep and soft, yet firm and clear sound making aesthetic effect that drives inner response of humans. Secondly, there are opinions on the performance of Jeodae that the players should express the characteristics of this instrument by focusing on the musical sentiment of North Koreans and its playing techniques, and that its expression in or blind following of the Western music style is to be sublated. Thirdly, Jeodae had been modified not only in its volume and structure to ease the modulation and to remove dull tones, but also in its materials as wood to ceramic. Fourthly, it is found that high pitched Jeodae were developped and applied in the field. From 1950s to 1960s, North Korea’s Jeodae had to meet the needs of the times during which the improvement project of national instruments and orchestration of national music required. North Korea was in the state of times that arguments coexisted that the tradition should be preserved and that it should be inherited in modernization. The various music produced in consequence of the modernization process of Jeodae and the views and arguments of its artists are cogitable at this time. This study intends to help comprehend Jeodae from insiders’ point of view in North Korea while supplementing the precedent researches revealing limitations due to its conduction from the outsiders’ view points.

1950~60년대 북한에서 진행된 저′대에 관한 다양한 논의의 흐름을 파악하기 위하여 1950~60년대에 북한에서 발간된 음악전문 잡지 『조선음악(朝鮮音樂)』과 종합예술잡지 『조선예술(朝鮮藝術)』에 수록된 저′대 관련 기사를 중심으로 연구를 진행하였다. 1950~60년대 북한 저′대 관련 기사에는 악기적 특성과 연주적 특성 그리고 저′대 개량에 관한 내용들이 포함되어 있었다. 기사 내용을 통하여 저′대를 둘러싼 전통의 보존과 현대적 계승에 관한 북한 내부의 흐름을 읽을 수 있었다. 연구내용을 알기 쉽게 정리하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 저′대의 음향적 특성은 깊숙하고 은은하면서도 야무지게 둥그런 투명한 소리와 우아하고 부드러운 음색과 인간의 내면세계에 감응할 수 있는 심미적 효과까지 연결하였다. 둘째, 저′대 연주의 방향성은 조선의 음악적 정서와 주법을 중심으로 악기의 특성을 발현해야 하며, 양악식 표현 또는 맹목적 모방 주법은 지양해야 하는 의견을 파악하였다. 셋째, 저′대 개량은 탁성의 제거와 전조를 원활하기 위한 악기의 음량 및 구조 개량 그리고 악기의 재질도 나무 저′대 및 도자기 저′대의 변화사례도 확인하였다. 넷째, 고음 저′대의 개발과 현장 적용사례를 확인하였다. 1950~60년대 북한의 저′대는 민족 악기 개량 사업과 민족관현악 편성에 필요한 악기구성의 조건을 충족해야 했다. 전통의 보존과 현대적 계승의 관점이 공존하는 시대상황에 놓여있었다. 저′대 개량의 진행 과정에서 도출된 다양한 음악들과 예술가들의 의견과 주장 그리고 논리들은 현 시점에서도 되새겨볼 사항 이다. 본고는 선행연구에서 나타나는 외부적 시선에서 진행한 연구의 한계를 보완하고, 북한 지역 내부자 관점에서 저′대를 이해하고자 하였다.
