This study is an exploratory research project to establish an academic network or map for liberal arts education. It aims to build the status of liberal arts by exploring the conceptual system which explains the target of liberal arts using its unique language. The subject to be explored in liberal arts education was defined as the ‘liberal education phenomenon’ and the academic networks of liberal arts, basic studies and the department of education were examined. Liberal arts education was defined as an integrated study which pursues the intrinsic value attached in the concept of liberal arts at an ideological level, penetrates the achievement of basic studies in regards to its content, and adopts the methodology of pedagogy for practical uses. When regarded in such a light, liberal arts education is largely structured into purpose, content, and practice theories. The criteria for the suitability of courses within the liberal arts based on liberal arts education as an academic study are determined by universality, academical and educational aspects. Liberal education pursues an education integrated with humanism, intelligence, and competency education, which are based on the universality of human beings possessing a good conscience, a degree of intelligence, and various abilities. Collective efforts to create discussions to make liberal arts education an academical study, and to extend its prospects, are urgently needed.

이 연구는 교양교육의 학문적 관계망 또는 학문적 지도 구축을 위한 탐색적 연구이다. 교양교육 고유의 탐구 대상을 독자적 언어로 설명하는 개념 체계를 탐색함으로써 학문으로서의 교양교육의 위상을 확보하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 교양교육학의 탐구 대상을 ‘교양교육 현상’으로 규정하고, 교양, 기초학문, 교육학과의 학문적 관계망을 고찰했다. 교양교육학은 이념적인 차원에서 교양의 개념에 붙박여 있는 내재적 가치를 추구하고, 내용적인 차원에서 기초학문의 성과를 가로지르며, 실천적인 차원에서 교육학의 방법론을 원용하는 통합학문이라고 정의했다. 이러한 교양교육학은 크게 목적론, 내용론, 실천론으로 구조화된다. 학문으로서의 교양교육에 근거한 교양 교과의 적합성 준거는 대학성, 학술성, 교육성으로 나타난다. 교양교육은 양심(良心), 양지(良知), 양능(良能)을 타고난 인간의 보편성에 근거하여 인성교육, 지성교육, 역량교육이 일체화된 통합적 교육을 지향한다. 교양교육의 학문화의 담론을 형성하고 지평을 확장해가는 공동체적 노력이 절실하다.
