This paper tries to examine the concept of plantation shown in La isla que se repite: El Caribe y la perspectiva posmoderna of Antonio Benítez Rojo. Although the term of ‘the Caribbean region’ is commonly used, there is also an opinion that emphasizes internal differences due to geographical, cultural and historical diversity. This is because there are many internal differences due to differences in language, geographical conditions of the island, and differences in historical experiences. In this situation, Benitez Rojo’s idea on La isla que se repite suggests an understanding of the commonalities and internal differences that exist in the Caribbean. Benítez Rojo explains that while the plantation was a structural condition in the process of forming Caribbean identity, the internal differences existing in the region are also related to plantation installation. The timing of the plantations in the Caribbean varies due to various factors, which have made meaningful changes in relation to the activities of African slaves. The difference between the areas where African slaves were able to actively interact with other cultural factors, and those that were not, led to cultural differences within the Caribbean. Benítez Rojo’s La isla que se repite focuses on structural factors that create regional differences within the Caribbean. This text has a different meaning from conventional Caribbean discourse in that it is attempting a theoretical model that can encompass the Caribbean. While it has been a common trend in Caribbean region studies to pay attention to and explain these cultural aspects, it is because Benítez Rojo looks for structural factors that have brought these cultural aspects, and explains the cultural diversity and commonalities in the Caribbean in relation to structural factors. In this paper, we would like to follow Benítez Rojo’s explanation and examine the meaning of plantation in the formation of Caribbean identity.

이 논문은 안토니오 베니테스 로호(Antonio Benítez Rojo)의 『반복하는 섬: 카리브해 지역 과 포스트모던 관점 (La isla que se repite: El Caribe y la perspectiva posmoderna)』에 나타난 플 랜테이션 개념을 통해 카리브해 지역 연구의 새로운 가능성을 살펴보고자 한다. ‘카리브해 지역’이라는 포괄적인 개념이 일반적으로 사용되지만 지리적, 문화적, 역사적 다양성으 로 인해 내부적인 차이를 강조하는 견해도 있다. 언어적 차이와 섬이라는 지형적 조건 그리고 역 사적인 경험의 차이 등으로 내부적인 차이가 적지 않기 때문이다. 이런 상황에서 『반복하는 섬』에 나타난 베니테스 로호의 사유는 카리브 지역에 존재하는 공통점과 내부적인 차이를 이해하는 데 시사점을 준다. 베니테스 로호는 카리브해 정체성 형성 과정에서 플랜테이션이 구조적인 조건이었지만, 이 지역 에 존재하는 내부적인 차이들 역시 플랜테이션 설치와 관련되어 있다고 설명한다. 카리브해 지역 에서 플랜테이션이 설치되는 시기가 여러 요인으로 인해 차이가 있는데, 이러한 시기의 차이가 아프리카 노예들의 활동과 관련해서 의미 있는 변화를 주었다는 것이다. 아프리카계 노예들이 다 른 문화적 요인들과 적극적으로 ‘상호작용’에 참여할 수 있는 지역과, 그렇지 못했던 지역의 차이 가 카리브해 지역 내에서 문화적 차이로 이어졌다. 베니테스 로호의 『반복하는 섬』은 카리브해 내의 지역적 차이들을 만들어내는 구조적인 요인에 주목하고 있다. 카리브 지역을 아우를 수 있는 이론적 모형을 시도하고 있다는 점에서 이 텍스트는 기존 카리브 담 론들과는 다른 의미를 갖는다. 카리브해 지역 연구에서 문화 양상에 주목하고 이를 설명하는 것이 일반적인 경향이었다면, 베니테스 로호는 문화 양상을 가져온 구조적 요인을 찾고, 카리브 내의 문 화적 다양성과 공통점을 구조적인 요인과 관련해서 설명하고 있기 때문이다. 이 논문에서는 로호 의 문제의식을 따라가면서 카리브 정체성 형성에서 플랜테이션이 갖는 의미를 살펴보고자 한다.
