The purpose of this study is to investigate how prospective elementary teachers understand the concepts of mass and weight. The Korean elementary science curriculum provided the achievement criteria into the unit of weight to teach the concept of weight but did not teach the mass concept. Therefore, compared with other countries, the Korean science curriculum may imply difficulty in understanding the concept of weight without being able to distinguish the concept of mass. The 79 prospective elementary teachers enrolled in 3 departments of the one national university of education were selected for convenience as the research subject. The questionnaires asking for understanding of weight and mass were developed, and the responses were analyzed to investigate schematically whether the these two concepts were distinguished. Based on this result, we discussed the problem of teaching the weight concept without understanding the mass concept, and summarized ideas on how to understand and teach the weight by basing it on the mass concept. This research proposed the method to promote a comprehensive understanding of weight and mass in the elementary teacher curriculum.

이 연구의 목적은 예비 초등교사들이 질량과 무게의 개념을 어떻게 구분하여 이해하는지를 조사하는 데 있다. 한국의 초등학교 과학 교육과정에는 무게 개념 단원에서 무게 개념을 지도 하도록 성취기준을 제안하면서 질량 개념은 지도하지 않도록 했다. 따라서, 우리나라의 과학 교 육과정은 다른 나라와 비교하면 질량에 대한 개념을 구별하지 못한 채 무게에 대한 개념을 이 해하는 데 어려움을 내포할 수 있다. 연구대상은 우리나라의 대도시에 속한 교육대학교에 재학 중인 예비 초등교사 중에서 79명을 학과별로 편의적으로 선택하였다. 무게와 질량에 대한 이해 를 묻는 설문지를 개발하여 그 응답을 분석하여 무게와 질량 개념에 대한 구별하는가를 개략적 으로 조사하였다. 이런 결과를 바탕으로 질량 개념을 이해하지 못한 상태에서 무게 개념을 가 르치는 문제를 논의하고 질량 개념을 바탕으로 무게 개념을 이해하고 가르치는 수업 방법에 대 한 아이디어를 정리하였다. 그럼으로써 초등학교 교사 교육과정에서 무게와 질량 질량에 대한 포괄적인 이해를 촉진하는 방안을 제안할 수 있었다.
