This study is about "Vetala Story". The book was created in Kashmir, India, in the 3rd century BC. It was then introduced to Tibet, Mongolia, and Manchuria. It is a story told by a demon named "Vetāla". The title of the Indian book is "Vetālapañcaviṁśatik", the title of the Tibetan book is "ro sgrung", the title of the Mongolian book is "siditü kegür". The Manchurian book has no title. India, Tibet, Mongolia and Manchuria narratives are completely similar in introduction, finishing method, speaker, listener, frame structure and chain type. However, the content, subject and material of the story "Vetala Story", which was passed down to Tibet, Mongolia and Manchuria, changed drastically. Not only that, the characteristics of the area permeated, and it became a story unique to the area. There is also a great deal of disagreement among scholars about the relationship between books in the four regions. This study focuses on the following: How did the stories spread? What are the characteristics of "Vetala Story" stories in each region?The first purpose of this study is to find out why "Vetala Story"has been in existence for more than 1,000 years. The second purpose is to examine the 1,000-year-old exchange of language and culture between different peoples of East Asia.

이야기는 그것이 발생하고 유행한 사회의 문화와 당시 사람들의 정서를 연구하는데 있어 매우 중요한 연구 자료이다. 이는 이야기에 그것이 발생한 지역과 발생한 때의 사회 현상과 상황, 당시 사람들의 사유가 담겨 있기 때문이다. 본 연구의 대상인 ‘起尸鬼 이야기’는 인도에서 창작되어 티베트, 몽골, 만주 등지로 東傳된 ‘귀신’이 해주는 이야기를 엮은 설화집이다. 인도, 티베트, 몽골, 만주의 ‘起尸鬼 이야기’ 각각 다른 언어로 기록되어 있지만 형식과 이야기 진행 방법, 시작과 결말이 완전히 같다. 그러나 극히 일부 이야기를 제외하고 각 지역의 설화집에 실려 있는 이야기의 내용은 완전히 다르다. 각 설화집에 모두 남아 있는 이야기와 변형되거나 각색된 이야기를 조사하고 각 이야기의 유형을 조사하면 사람들에 외면받거나 환영받는 이야기들이 어떤 것인지 확인될 수 있다. 본 연구는 인도 ‘起尸鬼 이야기’와 티베트, 몽골, 만주 각 설화집의 특성을 살피고 각 설화집에 실린 이야기의 유형적 특성을 살펴 가장 오래도록 많이 전파 된 이야기와 소멸 된 이야기의 유형을 확인하고자 한다. 이를 통해 고대 동아시아 사람들에게 어떤 이야기가 환영받았는지 살펴 당시 사람들의 정서와 사유체계를 이해하는데 자료로 삼고자 한다.
