This paper examines the humanistic imagination of looking at compatibility, one of the disasters, targeting folklore and folk beliefs. As we know, tigers are both feared and familiar to us. Although there are many stories about tigers, it exists in contexts related to disasters caused by tigers that show their close proximity. In this paper, we are trying to deal with disasters caused by tigers because we believe tiger stories convey a certain message to us suffering from the 21st century fendemics. Some people cite the decline in animal habitats due to indiscriminate environmental destruction as the main cause of frequent epidemics. Critics point out that the decrease in habitat is due to frequent contact with humans as animals with viruses come down to where humans are. Taking this view, the current COVID-19 incident may be another version of the tiger-induced disaster. In other words, the imaginations and efforts of people who have dealt with disasters caused by tigers in the past can help them overcome the present. The story of dealing with disasters caused by tigers gives us two implications. The first is the problem of man and nature. Nature's counterattack against humans who plundered nature is a disaster caused by tigers. Stories with the ending of a tiger-induced disaster show a man's active will to escape from the crisis, a natural counterattack. Furthermore, it also preaches the importance of insight to solve problems. By taking the view that human pressure is the cause of the tiger's attack on humans, the relative view of nature can be an important way to overcome our crisis. The second is human and human problems. Even a person with transcendental abilities can't solve the distrust that has sprung up inside. The old story tells us that trusting and trusting each other in the face of a crisis together is the clearest way to solve the problem. It also sends a warning that a new disaster will hit us again when trust in each other collapses. In this respect, the imagination of dealing with disasters caused by tigers and the implications of them are ongoing.

이 논문은 설화와 민간신앙을 대상으로 하여 재난 가운데 하나인 호환을 바라보는 인문적 상상력을 살펴본 것이다. 주지하는 바와 같이 호랑이는 두려운 동물인 동시에 우리와 친숙한 동물이기도 하다. 호랑이에 대한 이야기는 다양하게 남아 있지만 실체적 호랑이와 가까운 모습을 보여주는 것은 호환과 관련된 맥락 속에 존재한다. 이 논문에서 호환을 다루려는 것은 호랑이 이야기가 21세기 펜데믹을 겪고 있는 우리에게 일정한 메시지를 전달해 준다고 보기 때문이다. 어떤 사람은 빈번하게 발생하는 전염병의 원인을 무차별적 환경 파괴로 동물 서식지가 감소한 것을 주원인으로 꼽기도 한다. 서식지가 줄어들면서 바이러스를 보유한 동물이 인간이 있는 곳으로 내려오면서 인간과 자주 접촉이 이뤄진 데 따른 것이라는 지적이다. 이러한 관점을 취하면, 현재 COVID-19 사태는 버전을 달리한 호환일 수 있다. 이를 뒤집어 말하면, 과거 호환에 대처했던 사람들의 상상력과 노력을 통해서 현재를 극복할 수 있는 방안을 얻을 수도 있다는 것이다. 호환을 다루는 이야기는 우리에게 두 가지 시사점을 던져 준다. 첫 번째는 인간과 자연의 문제이다. 자연을 약탈한 인간에 대한 자연의 역습이 바로 호환이다. 호환으로부터 벗어난다는 결말을 지닌 이야기들은 자연의 역습인 위기로부터 벗어나고자 하는 인간의 적극적인 의지를 보여준다. 나아가 문제를 해결할 수 있는 통찰력의 중요성을 설파하기도 한다. 인간이 호랑이에게 가한 압력이 원인이 되어 호랑이가 인간을 공격하는 호환이 발생한다는 관점을 취함으로써, 자연을 바라보는 상대주의적 관점이 우리가 처한 위기를 극복할 수 있는 중요한 방법론이 될 수 있다는 것을 호환 이야기는 전해주고 있다. 두 번째는 인간과 인간의 문제이다. 초월적 능력을 지닌 이인도 내부에 싹튼 불신을 해소시켜주지 못한다. 함께 맞이한 위기 상황에 서로가 서로를 믿고 신뢰하는 것 그것이 문제를 해결할 수 있는 가장 명확한 방법이라는 것을 옛이야기가 말해주고 있다. 또 서로에 대한 신뢰가 무너질 때 새로운 호환이 다시 우리를 덮쳐올 것이라는 경고도 함께 보내오고 있다. 이러한 측면에서 호환을 다루는 상상력과 그에 내포된 의미는 현재 진행형이다.
