The purpose of this paper is to examine the characteristics and writing direction of Korean grammar books published in Japan in the early modern period, this will be done through a comparison of Haneotong(󰡔韓語通󰡕, 1909) and Haneomunjeon(󰡔韓語文典󰡕, 1909). This will be achieved by examining Korean󰠏related documents written by the Japanese after the publication of Haneoipmun(󰡔韓語入門󰡕) in 1880. This is done by comparing and analyzing the purpose of the compilation of the two texts (while noting the distinct character of the grammar books), in addition we look at the structure of the documents, and the diversity of Korean grammar descriptions which were all compared and analyzed. Unlike the authors of other workbooks and conversation books in the early modern period, the two researchers who had a high knowledge of Korean were the author of Haneotong(󰡔韓語通󰡕), Maema Kyosaku, and the author of Haneomunjeon(󰡔韓語文典󰡕, Takahashi Doru. The orientation of these grammar books was not seen as a description for practical purposes. Rather, the knowledge of the Korean language that was acquired by the two researchers was embodied in their writing qualities and can be viewed as a compilation centered on Korean grammar. Unlike other Korean language books of this period, these books were filled with insightful grammar descriptions. The linguistic characteristics of the Korean language were incorporated into the grammar books through the phonology and the history of the Korean language. Since these two scholars' writings have influenced Korean linguists after the post󰠏 Japanese colonial period, we emphasize that Korean linguists have been greatly helped in describing and organizing their grammar.

이 논문은 근대 초기 문법서로 알려진 『한어통(韓語通)』(1909)과 『한어문전(韓語文典)』(1909)이 지니는 언어학적 가치에 주목하여 일본인의 조선어 학습과 관련하여 이 문법서의 역사적 가치를 비교하여 고찰하였다. 우선 두 문헌의 집필 및 편찬 의도를 두 연구자의 서언 을 통해서 파악해 보고자 했다. 그것은 조선어 학습서가 아니라 문법서로의 지향이었다. 그 다음으로 문법서의 면모를 갖추기 위해 조선어학 개론 성격의 목차 구성을 통해 당시 조선어 의 역사, 음운, 품사 설정에 기반을 둔 문법, 문장 예시 등에 반영관 언어적 사실을 개괄적으로 살펴보았다. 그런 맥락에서 두 문헌은 일본인의 조선어 이해를 위한 문법서의 효시라 할 만하며, 근대계몽적 성격의 서술이 돋보이는 언어관과 문법관의 면모을 파악할 수 있었다. 결 국 두 문헌이 바라보고 지향했던 당시 조선어에 대한 태도와 서술자의 문법관 등이 어떻게 반영되어 있는지를 분석하여 이 두 저술의 역사적 의의를 밝혀 보고자 했다. 한국어교육사는 물론 한국어학사에서도 잘 다루어지지 않았지만, 이 논의는 근대 초기 일본인 문법서가 던져 준 조선어의 문법을 통해 일본인 어학자들의 근대 언어 의식의 양상을 확인하고 향후 전개될 한국과 일본의 문법서 연구의 전망을 논의하였다.
