This study is a reinterpretation of gift culture in a new way instead of the traditional way. This presupposes critical reflection on Confucian culture, and is an attempt to explore the part that has been internalized in the life of Koreans in a new way without being completely dismantled while the ideology of Confucianism has been agitated since modern times. So, the purpose of this thesis is to reinterpret the problem of giving and receiving in our Confucian culture, that is, the problem of gifts, as the theory of gifts in the West. Mauss’s argument, which can be used as the beginning of Western gift theory inquiry, is the proposition that ‘a gift is an economic exchange in the end’; Derrida’s attempt to dismantle the traditional gift theory is ‘a gift is impossible’. After examining the viewpoints of Mauss and Derrida dialectically, his own original viewpoint (the third peak) of Ricoeur’s argument, which presented a statement, can be summarized under the proposition that ‘we still need gifts’. From this perspective, I tried to reinterpret the gift of Confucian culture.

본 연구는 선물문화를 전통적인 방식 대신에 새로운 방식으로 재해석한 것이다. 이는 유교문화에 대한 비판적 성찰을 전제하며, 근대 이후 유교 이데올로기가 동요 상태에 있으면서 완전히 해체되지 않고 한국인의 삶 속에 새로운 방식으로 내재화된 부분을 탐색하기 위한 시도이다. 그래서 본고의 목적은 우리의 유교문화 중 주고받음의 문제, 즉 선물의 문제를 서구의 선물론으로 재해석한 것이다. 서양의 선물론 탐구의 효시로 삼을만한 모스의 논의는 ‘결국 선물은 경제적 교환이다’ 라는 명제로, 전통적 선물론을 해체하고자 했던 데리다의 시도는 ‘선물은 불가능하다’라 는 명제로, 마지막으로 모스와 데리다의 관점을 변증법적으로 검토한 후 자신만의 독창 적 관점(제3의 정점)을 제시한 리쾨르의 주장은 ‘그래도 선물은 필요하다’라는 명제로 요약할 수 있다. 이런 시각에서 필자는 유교문화의 선물 문제를 새롭게 해석하고자 했다.
