This paper compares Korean bhikkhuni Kim Iryŏp and Chinese bhikgu Hong-il in relation to Buddhist culture. Kim Iryeop and Hong-il stood out in the field of art and culture before embracing Buddhism, and end their lives with practicing asceticism thoroughly. I write about the cultural influence that connects gender, country, and era, through a study of commonalities and differences between them. This paper is the first one to compare the Kim Iryŏp and Hong-il. The method of study follows a comparison method concerning background, achievements and thought, and influence. I consider background and Buddhist recognition process firstly, and Buddhist asceticism and cultural influence secondly. We distinguish the difference about background and Buddhist recognition process by gender and regional differences. The process of embracing Buddhism is different paradoxical perception through Zen knowledge and natural one. The commonality of Kim Iryŏp and Hong-il is the recognition of Buddhism. This is consistent with the awareness of the transience and embracing Buddhism. Buddhist asceticism is represented by Zen meditation(參禪) and religious precepts(戒律) and is same in thoroughness despite difference of characteristics of Buddhism in each country. There are big and small differences in cultural influence. However, it is the same to propagate the Buddhist missionary work and to enhance its status using their strong influence. This study is meaningful in that it considers the role of Buddhist culture through the modern Buddhist culture of Kim Iryŏp and Hong-il. The cultural influence of the two monks is valid in the present and will continue in the future.

본 논문은 한국의 비구니 김일엽과 중국의 비구 홍일을 불교문화와 관련하여 비교하는 논문이다. 김일엽과 홍일은 출가 전 예술 등 문화 분야에서 두각을 나타냈으며, 불교에 귀의한 후 철저한 수행으로 일생을 마감한다. 두 인물의 공통점과 차이점에 관한 비교 연구를 통해 시대, 국가, 젠더가 연대하는 문화적 영향력에 관해 논술한다. 김일엽과 홍일을 비교한 연구는 본 논문이 최초이다. 연구의 방법은 배경 행적과 사상, 영향으로 분류하여 비교하는 방식이다. 크게 두 부분으로 먼저 배경과 불교 인식 과정을 고찰한다. 다음으로 불교 수행과 문화 영향력을 살펴본다. 배경은 젠더, 지역의 차이로 구별할 수 있다. 김일엽과 홍일은 배경 기반은 다르나 투철한 불교 인식은 동일하다. 무상에 관한 자각과 불교 귀의로 일관되며 동일하게 나타난다. 이후 출가하는 과정은 선지식을 통한 역설적인 인식, 혹은 자연스러운 순리로 외연은 다르지만 내포한 정신은 같게 나타난다. 다음으로 고찰할 것은 불교 수행과 문화 영향력이다. 두 사람의 수행법은 ‘참선’과 ‘계율’로 대표되며 각국 불교 특색에 따라 다르게 나타났을 뿐 철저한 수행이라는 점은 같다. 두 사람의 문화 영향력에는 크고 작은 차이가 존재한다. 그러나 반향과 강한 파급력으로 불교 홍법과 지위 제고의 효과를 거둔 것은 같다. 본 연구는 근대 불교의 문화인 김일엽과 홍일의 문화 예술적 업적을 통해 불교문화의 역할을 고찰하는 의의를 지닌다. 두 인물의 문화적 영향력은 현대에도 유효하며 미래에도 이어질 것이다.
