This Painting of Water-Moon Avalokiteśvara is one of the over 15,000 artworks that Edoardo Chiossone (1833-1889) donated to the city of Genova. As a renowned engraver, he was invited by the Japanese government that was eager to modernize the nation's industry, education, culture and military during the 19th century. This Painting of Water-Moon Avalokiteśvara is painted on a piece of silk that is 105.9 centimeters high and 55.4 centimeters wide. It is currently framed on a panel. The Avalokiteśvara is covered with a veil from the head all the way down to the feet while sitting on a rock cross-legged with the face looking to the right side of the painting. In addition, the Avalokiteśvara in the painting appears to be seated inside the cave that is open to the front of the Bodhisattva with rocks and two bamboo trees depicted in the back and over the head. The production date of this painting could be estimated to be the middle of 14th century judging by the colors and drawing technique and especially by the natural shape of the arabesque in a circle design. This Painting of Water-Moon Avalokiteśvara faithfully follows the basic techniques and styles of Goryeo Buddhist paintings. Basic pigments of this Painting of Water-Moon Avalokiteśvara also are red, azurite blue and navy blue which are all primary and unmixed with other colors. At the same time, crysography is used on the faces, outlines and patterns as shown in this picture. Moreover, the whole screen is filled with various patterns leaving no empty space and the main is the arabesque in a circle design. This Painting of Water-Moon Avalokiteśvara is generally similar to other paintings of its kind created during the Goryeo Dynasty. However, it shows a few unique characteristics of its own. It is the only example of a pine tree depicted in the Painting of Water-Moon Avalokiteśvara. Moreover, it is the oldest example of a pine tree among the entire remaining Korean paintings. This Painting of Water-Moon Avalokiteśvara is a masterpiece that contains various elements including delicate details while its overall composition and color harmony is gentle but perfect.

이 수월관음도는 에드아르드 기욧소네（1833-89)가 제노바시에 기중한 15,000여점 가운데 한점이다. 그는 뛰어난 동판화가로 19세기에 일본이 산업, 군사, 교육, 문화 등 각 분야의 근대화를 위하여 초빙한 외국인의 한 사람이었다. 이 수월관음도는 비단에 채색하였고 크기가 세로 105.9cm 가로 55.4cm이다. 현재 이 그림은 패널로 되어있다. 관음보살은 머리에서부터 전신에 베일을 걸치고 오른쪽 측면을 향하여 반가한 자세로 바위 위에 앉아있다. 관음보살이 마치 앞쪽이 트인 동굴 안에 앉아있는 듯, 등 뒤와 머리위에는 암석과 두 그루의 대나무가 묘사되어 있다. 이 작품의 제작시기는 채색과 묘법 특히 당초원문의 형상이 자연스러운 점으로 미루어 보아 14세기 중반 경으로 짐작된다. 이 수월관음도는 고려불화의 기본적인 표현과 기법을 충실하게 따르고 있다. 이 작품의 주조색은 주, 녹청, 군청이고 이들을 원색 그대로 사용하였다. 또한 이 그림은 얼굴과 몸체는 물론 많은 선과 문양을 금니로 그렸다. 뿐만 아니라 다른 고려불화와 같이 당초원문이 메인 문양이며, 문양으로 가득 채워 여백을 남기지 않았다. 이와 같이 이 그림은 다른 고려의 수월관음도와 그다지 다르지 않게 보이지만 몇 가지 매우 특이 한 점이 있다. 그것은 수월관음도 가운데 유일하게 소나무가 그려져 있다는 점이다. 무엇보다도 이 소나무는 한국 그림 가운데 시기가 가장 올라가는 사례이다. 이 그림은 화면구성 요소가 다양하면서도 구성이 짜임새가 있고, 색의 조화, 치밀한 묘사 등 온화하면서 품격이 느껴지는 걸작이다.
