The purpose of this study is to find out students’ perceptions of election and participation, draw up points of discussion, and then suggest the direction of democratic civic education in schools. To that end, a survey and interview were conducted on students of the Youth Education Council in Y area of Gyeonggi-do. The analysis results are as follows. Regarding student participation, first, the level of participation varied by student participation, and overall, participation was active in the area of comparative studies rather than in the curriculum, and participation level was lower in school management. Second, the student participation method was the most active in student self-governing activities, and the participation of the school management committee was the lowest. In relation to election education, first, school support for the expansion of election participation was proposed to expand discussion classes, participate in important decision-making, and establish new political education. Second, schools, election management committees, and teachers played an important role in student election education. Finally, all the students answered positively, and after the lowering of the election age, they responded positively in terms of williㅗngness to participate in elections, interest in community affairs, interest in elections and politics, and efficacy. Based on the analysis results, the direction of future student participation and election education was proposed.

본 연구는 선거와 참여에 관한 학생들의 인식을 알아보고 논의점을 도출 후 학교 민주시민교육 방향을 제안하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 경기도 Y지역의 청소년교육의회 학생들을 대상으로 설문조사와 면담을 진행하였다. 분석결과는 다음과 같다. 학생 참여와 관련하여 첫째, 학생 참여 내용별로 참여 수준이 다양하였으며 전반적으로 교과 영역보다 비교과 영역에서 참여가 활성화되어 있었고, 학교경영에 있어서는 참여수준이 낮았다. 둘째, 학생참여 방식은 학생자치활동이 가장 활성화되었으며 학교운영위원회 참여가 가장 낮은 수준이었다. 선거교육과 관련하여 첫째, 선거참여 확대를 위한 학교지원은 토론수업 확대, 중요한 의사결정 참여, 정치교육 신설이 제시되었다. 둘째, 학생 선거교육에 중요한 역할을 담당할 기관으로 학교, 선거관리위원회, 교사가 높은 비중을 차지하였다. 마지막으로 선거참여 성향은 모든 학생들이 긍정적으로 답하였고, 선거연령 하향이후 선거참여 의지, 지역사회문제 관심, 선거와 정치에 관심, 효능감에 있어서 긍정적으로 변화하였다고 답하였다. 분석 결과에 기초하여 향후 학생 참여와 선거 교육 방향을 제안하였다.
