The present study is an analysis of the reality of human rights violations experienced by medical students in school classes and hospital practice. The results of in-depth interviews with 21 medical students who voluntarily expressed their will to participate in the study revealed factors related to human rights violations namely ‘a hierarchical order’, ‘authoritarianism’, ‘violent behavior’, ‘a coercive atmosphere’, ‘sexual violence’, ‘difficulties to self-reform’, and ‘a lack of awareness’. The key category drawn out on the basis of these elements is ‘medical students trying to survive a rigid authoritarianism’. Under the pretext of training doctors with a high level of expertise involving the handling of human life, medical schools have readily formed an authoritarian organizational culture in which students must obey the words of doctors who are both seniors and teachers to themselves. In the midst of an authoritarianism based on a hierarchical order spanning not just medical school but training hospitals and even the careers of students, medical students at the very end of the hierarchical order inevitably experience various human rights violations. Resolving this authoritarianism requires external and institutional elements, namely, revitalizing reporting organizations and establishing stronger punishment systems as well as internal and cultural elements, specifically, efforts on the part of medical school and hospital members including professors, specialists, and medical students, along with the revitalization of self-governing student organizations that can promote these efforts.

본 연구는 의대생이 학교 수업과 병원 실습에서 겪는 인권 침해 실태를 근거이론방법으로 분석한 것이다. 본 연구를 위해 의대협 홈페이지에 심층 인터뷰의 참여 의사를 묻는 안내문을 올리고, 의과대학이 있는 대학교에 공식적으로 협조 공문을 보내 심층 인터뷰 참여자를 모집하였다. 참여 의사를 밝힌 의대생 21명을 심층 인터뷰하였고, 근거이론방법으로 심층 인터뷰 내용을 분석하였다. 그 결과 의대생이 겪는 인권 침해와 관련된 요인으로 ‘견고한 위계질서’, ‘권위주의의 확대⋅재생산’, ‘폭력 행위로 인한 학업의 어려움’, ‘강압적 분위기로 인한 자율성 상실’, ‘남성중심주의적 조직문화로 인한 성적 침해’, ‘자정작용의 어려움’, ‘의식의 부재’가 있었다. 이 요인들을 토대로 도출된 핵심 범주는 ‘의대생의 견고한 권위주의에서 살아남기’이다. 의과대학은 대학을 넘어 수련병원, 나아가 사회생활까지 연결된 견고한 위계질서를 가지고 있다. 이러한 위계질서를 바탕으로 사람의 생명을 다루는 고도의 전문성을 갖춘 의사를 양성한다는 명분을 가지고 선배이자 교수자인 의사의 말에 복종하게 만드는 권위주의가 쉽게 형성된다. 이러한 권위주의 속에서, 위계질서의 말단에 놓인 의대생들에게 다양한 인권 침해가 일어나고 있었다. 이 권위주의를 해소하기 위한 방안으로는 신고기구의 활성화와 강력한 처벌 제도 마련이라는 외부적이고 제도적인 접근, 교수⋅전공의⋅의대생 등 의대 및 병원 구성원의 자발적 노력과 이를 도모할 수 있는 학생자치 조직의 활성화라는 내부적이고 문화적인 접근이 제기됐다.
