The purpose of Buddhist education is to transform one into the highest character through the training, which the Buddha’s disciple has to undergo, is threefold: Training in of higher Morality, Mentality and Wisdom. I believe that it is of considerable significance to explore the direction of development of Korean Buddhist Sangha education by examining the historical development process and the present of the Sri Lankan Buddhist Sangha education system. In this writing I examine the history, development process and present of Sri Lankan Buddhist Sangha education. Sri Lanka is an island country located geographically southeast of India, forming almost the same cultural sphere as India in many aspects, including politics, economy, society, and culture. Sri Lankan Buddhism was delivered from India around the 3rd century B. C. and is considered to have preserved early teachings close to their original form and is also known as Therav da Buddhist tradition. It is highly regarded as a very important event in the history of Buddhist literature in the world that in this small island country, Pali Nik yas and its Commentaries were first written in Singhali in the 1st Century B. C. E. With that history Sri Lankan Buddhist Sangha education has responded with a flexible attitude to the trends of times, ideas and social demands since the early days of Buddhist transmission from India, and has adopted a systemic teaching method encompassing tradition and modernity even in today's changes and demands. Especially since the late 19th century, the introduction of empirical and objective academic systems and methodologies of Western modernity under the influence of the West into the existing Sri Lankan Buddhist Sangha education system played a decisive role in the revival of it. Therefore the purpose of this study is to use it as an opportunity to discover lessons and implications in exploring the development of the stagnant Korean Buddhist Sangha education, by examining the current state of Buddhist Sangha education in Sri Lanka, which is adopting a new educational methodology that is effective in accordance with the subjects based on original Pali texts.

불교 교육의 목적은 인간을 도덕적, 지성적, 그리고 정신적 완전성을 통해 가장 높은 인격으로 전환하려는 것이다. 본고에서 필자는 스리랑카 상좌부 불교의 승가교육 역사와 발전과정, 그리고 현재를 고찰한다. 스리랑카는 지리적으로 인도 남동쪽에 위치한 섬나라로서 정치·경제·사회·문화 등 여러 측면에서 인도와 거의 동일한 문화권을 형성하고 있다. 스리랑카 불교는 B. C. E. 3세기경 인도에서 전래되어 현재까지 초기의 가르침을 거의 원형에 가깝게 보존하고 있다고 간주되고 있다. 또한 남방 상좌부 전통의 불교국가로 알려져 있다. 이 작은 섬나라에서 B. C. E. 1세기에 Pali어 삼장과 그 주석서들을 최초로 문자로 기록하여 오늘날까지 유통시킨 것은 세계 불교 문헌역사에서 매우 중요한 사건으로 높이 평가 받고 있다. 이러한 스리랑카 승가교육의 역사적 발전과정과 그 현재를 고찰함으로써 한국승가교육의 발전 방향을 모색해 보려는 노력은 적지 않은 의미가 있을 것으로 사료된다. 스리랑카의 승가교육은 인도로부터의 불교 전래 초기부터 시대와 사상의 흐름, 그리고 사회적 요구에 유연한 자세로 대응해 왔다. 그리고 오늘날의 새로운 변화와 요구에도 전통과 현대를 포괄하는 체계적인 승가교육 방식을 채택함으로써 응답하고 있다. 특히 19세기 후반 이후부터 서구의 영향 아래 서양 근대의 실증적, 객관적 학문체계와 방법론을 기존의 승가교육 시스템에 도입하게 된 것이 스리랑카 승가교육의 중흥에 결정적인 역할을 하게 되었다. 필자는 이 논문에서 원전에 근거한 교과목과 시대에 따라 효율적이고 새로운 교육 방법론을 채택하고 있는 현재 스리랑카 승가교육의 현황을 고찰한다.
