Hyeam’s standards of practice can be broadly divided into “Let’s live with the Buddha” and “Die while studying”. In order to live with the Buddha, Hyeam thoroughly practiced the practice of Jangjabulwa and Buddha throughout his life and As if he would die while practicing, he devoted himself to practice. The reason Hyeam practiced with Jangjwabul was because the ancestors said, “I can get enlightenment in one week.” Hyeam inherited the ancestors of many high priests such as Gyeongheo, Mangong, and Seongcheol of modern times and His true practice as a practitioner who devotes himself to true practice is an example of many practitioners in the future. From the day he was becamed to Haeinsa Temple, Hyeam started with Jangjwabulwa and daily Japanese food, throughout his entire life, he has devoted himself only to the Doota precepts of seon practice and Buddhism, as a representative of Korean Buddhism, he established the spirit of the Seon family and devoted himself to the reform of the Buddhist denomination and popularization of Buddhism. Hye-am’s seon thought has appeared as a practice in the process of acquiring the seon’s spirit such as bullibmunja, gyooebyeoljeon, in particular, Hye-am only was seek up whadoo instead of text.

혜암의 수행의 기준은 “부처와 같이 살자”와 “공부하다 죽어라”로 대별될 수 있다. 혜암은 부처와 같이 살기 위하여 장좌불와의 수행을 철저하게 평생동안 실천하며, 수행하다가 죽을 것처럼 용맹정진을 하였다. 혜암이 장좌불와의 수행을 한 것은 조사들의 “일주일 안에 견성할 수 있다.”는 말 때문이었다. 혜암은 근현대의 경허, 만공, 성철 등 여러 고승들의 선맥(禪脈)을 계승하며, 장좌불와(長坐不臥)와 일일일식(一日一食) 그리고 두타고행(頭陀苦行)의 참선수행에만 몰두해온 한국불교의 대표적인 선승(禪僧)으로 선가(禪家)의 종풍을 확립하며 불교 교단의 개혁과 불교의 대중화를 위해서 헌신하였다. 혜암의 선사상은 조사선의 불립문자, 교외별전 등의 선지를 체득하는 과정에서 실참의 수행으로 나타났으며, 혜암은 오직 깨달음을 통해서 인간의 자유와 행복을 구현할 수 있는 기회를 스스로 체험하고 완성한 경험을 바탕으로 수행자와 불자들을 위해서 일생동안 헌신하였다. 혜암은 선종의 선사상을 투철하고 철저하게 실참(實參)의 수행으로 제시하면서 후대에 전개하였다.
