This work examines the structure and expression of modern novels. Examining the relationship between fairy tales and novels is meaningful in examining the narrative archetypes of modern novels by identifying the structure of the narrative that fundamentally operates in the changing society and human life. To this end, this paper examines Wallace Martin’s narrative theory, which analyzes Catherine Mansfield’s short story Happiness and Ernest Hemingway’s short story Francis McCumber’s Short Happiness based on V. J. Propp’s research on fairy tales as the research background. In Propp’s study of fairy tales, this is a work that applies the functions of 31 characters, the method of combining stories through these functions, and the mutable and invariant elements identified therein to modern fiction. The helper of the character in the fairy tales changes its place to a destructive person who awakens the false life of the protagonist in the modern novel, and the royal palace, the space of the fairy tales, is replaced by a mysterious garden or african jungle in the modern novel. In this way, based on the study of the structure of Propp and Martin, in the main body, we compared the Grimm’s fairy tale Rapunzel and Oh Hyeonjong’s Lettuce and Rapunzel, confirming meta-sense and postassisted narrative transformation, and Perrault’s fairy tale The Blue Beard and Ha Sungran’s The Blue Beard’s First Wife examines the metaphor of the blue beard and the transformation of sexual identity. Through this, Oh Hyeonjong puts modern people’s daily lives on top of the original fairy tale structure, and seeks a new transformation of consciousness through irony and catastrophe, moving from the general trend of fairy tales of happy and beautiful endings of the didactic morality. and Ha Sungran minimizes the structure of the original fairy tale and maximizes the symbolic nature of gender.

본고는 현대 소설의 동화 구조와 표출 양상을 점검한다. 동화와 소설의 관계를 살펴보는 것은 변화하는 사회와 인간의 삶에 근원적으로 작동하는 서사의 구조를 규명함으로써 현대 소설의 서사 원형을 점검하는 데 의미가 있다. 이를 위해 본고는 연구 배경으로 블라디미르 프로프의 동화 연구를 바탕으로 캐서린 맨스필드의 「행복」과 어니스트 헤밍웨이의 「프랜시스 매 컴버의 짧았던 행복」을 분석한 월리스 마틴의 서사 연구를 점검한다. 프로프의 동화 연구에서 31가지 등장인물의 기능과 이 기능들을 통한 이야기의 결합 방식, 거기에서 확인되는 변이 요소와 불변 요소를 현대 소설에 적용 하는 작업이다. 동화에서 등장인물의 조력자가 현대 소설에서는 주인공의 거짓 삶을 일깨워주는 파괴적인 인물로 자리를 바꾸고, 동화의 공간인 왕궁 은 현대 소설에서 신비로운 정원이나 아프리카 밀림으로 대체된다. 이처럼 프로프와 마틴의 구조 연구를 근간으로 본론에서는, 그림 동화 「라푼젤」과 오현종의 「상추, 라푼젤」을 비교하면서, 메타적 시선과 탈동화 적 서사 변형을 확인하고, 샤를 페로 동화 「푸른 수염 남자」와 하성란의 「푸른 수염의 첫 번째 아내」를 비교하면서 푸른 수염의 메타포와 성 정체성의 변형 양상을 고찰한다. 이를 통해 오현종은 원작 동화의 구조 위에 현대인 의 일상을 얹음으로써, 권선징악의 행복하고 아름다운 결말이라는 동화의 일반적인 흐름에서 나아가 아이러니와 파국(불행한 결말)을 통한 새로운 의식 의 전환을 도모하고, 하성란은 원작 동화의 구조를 최소화하고 제목의 상징 성을 극대화하여 성 소수자의 성 정체성에 대한 근원적인 질문과 인식의 전 환을 모색하고 있음을 점검한다.
