This study aimed to review the representation of “violence” within the subculture of Japan by exploring 『Astro Boy』 written and illustrated by Osamu Tezuka. The representation of “violence” in 『Astro Boy』 is classified into semiotic and representational presentation. The semiotic presentation of violence has the aspect of concealing the vividness and cruelty of violence of ‘here and now’. For this reason, the invisible violence of the legal system, hidden beyond visible violence emerges. 『Astro Boy』 revealed that ‘robot law’ was not only a means of governing robots, but also an obstacle for saving human lives, and justice could begin by getting over the restrain of ‘unreasonable’ laws. The representation of violence could cause conflict against post-war democracy that devoted in defending the ideology of Constitutional Law for the establishment of a peaceful country after war renounce. 『Astro Boy did not unilaterally criticize the legal system, and instead provided the evidence for law protection by demonstrating that existence treated as non-human beings took the legal rights of humans or the act of destroying existing laws or creating new laws could result in more violence. Likewise, 『Astro Boy』 can be considered as a text that deliberate the issues of democracy by placing ‘violence’ at the center. Meanwhile, in accepting 『Astro Boy』, there are some cases having sensitive reaction towards violence apparently presented in the animation rather than focusing on the message that the animation intends to convey as a story. Concealing the representation of violence that may cause discomfort is more dangerous in a sense that it could even create more unprotected victims by making people believe as if human beings and intelligent machines have no violence. 『Astro Boy』 shows that a wide range of efforts for the representation of violence brutality and indirect experience of this violence is the only clue that leaves us to question ourselves what we have to do in order to avoid violence.

이 글에서는 데즈카 오사무의 만화 『철완아톰』을 대상으로, 일본 서브컬처 속의 ‘폭력’ 표상 문제에 대해서 검토해보고자 한다. 『철완아톰』 속의 ‘폭력’ 표상은 기호적 표현과 재현적 표현으로 나눠지는데, 폭력의 기 호적 표현은 ‘지금-여기’의 폭력의 생생함과 잔혹성을 은폐한다는 측면이 있지만, 바로 그 때문에 가시적인 폭력 너머에 가려져 있는, 비가시적인 법과 제도의 폭력성을 드러낸다. 『철완아톰에서는 ‘로봇법’이 로봇의 지배하는 수단이 될 뿐만 아니라, 실은 인간을 구하 는 데 있어 장해가 되기도 하며, 정의는 그러한 ‘부조리’한 법의 구속을 넘어서는 것으로 부터 시작될 수도 있음을 보여준다. 이러한 폭력 표상은 전쟁방기에 의한 평화국가 건립 이라는 헌법의 이념을 지키는 데 주력했던 전후민주주의와 마찰하기도 한다. 하지만 『철완아톰』은 법 제도를 일방적으로 비판하기만 하지 않고, 비인간들로 다뤄져 왔던 존재들 이 자신들의 법적 권리를 손에 넣는 과정을 보여주거나, 기존의 법을 파괴하고 새로운 법 을 만드는 행위가 또 다른 폭력으로 이어지는 모습을 보여줌으로써, 법 수호의 근거를 제 시하기도 한다. 이렇게 『철완아톰』은 ‘폭력’을 중심에 놓고 민주주의의 문제를 숙고하는 텍스트라 할 수 있겠다. 한편 『철완아톰』의 수용에 있어 이야기로서 만화가 전달하고자 하는 메시지보다는 당장 눈앞에 드러나는 만화 표현의 ‘폭력성’에 민감하게 반응하는 경우가 있는데, 불쾌감을 줄지 모르는 폭력의 표상의 은폐야말로, 인간이나 기계의 폭력성을 마치 없는 것처럼 만들어 무 방비한 피해자를 양산할 수 있다는 점에서 더욱 위험하다. 폭력의 잔혹함을 재현하고자하는 다양한 노력과 그것을 통한 폭력의 간접 경험만이, 폭력 회피를 위해 지금 해야 할 일 이 무엇인지를 생각할 수 있도록 해줄 유일한 단서임을 『철완아톰』은 보여준다.
