This paper aims to find out what the literary character and significance of Donghak’s lyrics work “Yongdamga” is. This work was discussed too lean to the point of religious lyrics in the existing discussions, so the unique individual characteristics and meaning of the work were not properly revealed. With the intention of overcoming this point, this paper focused on the literary character and significance of the work, focusing on what is revealed in the form and content of the gentian. ``Yongdamga’’ is composed of a three-level structure of narrative -head office, association, arranging information that conveys objective facts in the front, and feeling or appreciation derived from it. It takes the form of arranging. In terms of the pitch rate, the narrative and the head office are markedly different, but it is confirmed that the use of the 3·4 note changes to the 4·4 note. When entering the headquarters, the 3·4 notes are used to convey exceptional content. Even in the time of narration, the narrative focuses on the past or the present, and the head office focuses on the present, while the association takes the form of adding to the present to the future. If the space narrative deals with the whole of Gyeongju, the headquarters will move to Yongdam, which is located in Mt. “Yongdamga” is a work that has a certain character of sleepy lyrics, but does not actively accept it. This is because, in the work, the world before the dream-dream-after the dream, which is the basic and important characteristic of the sleepy lyrics, does not appear separately, nor does the dialogue unfold in the dream world be presented separately. 본고는 동학의 가사 작품인 「용담가」의 문학적 성격과 그 의의가 무엇인가를 찾기 위한 목적을 갖는다. 이 작품은 기존 논의에서 종교가사라는 점에 너무 치우쳐 논의됨으로써 작품이 가진 고유한 개별적 특성과 의미가 제대로 드러나지 않았다. 이런 점을 극복하고자 하는 의도에서 본고에서는 「용담가」의 형식이나 내용 등에서 드러나는 것을 중심으로 하여 작품이 가진 문학적 성격과 의의 등에 대한 집중적인 작품론적 논의를 펼쳤다. 「용담가」는 서사(첫째 마디)- 본사(둘째 마디, 셋째 마디)-결사(넷째 마디)의 3단계 구조로 구성되어 있으면서 앞에는 객관적인 사실을 전달하는 정보를 배열하고 뒤에는 그것에서 도출된 느낌이나 감상을 배열하는 형식을 취하고 있다. 음보율로 본다면 서사와 본사는 확연히 다른데 3·4 음보를 활용하는 데서 4·4 음보로 바뀌는 것으로 확인된다. 본사에 들어가면 3·4 음보를 예외적인 내용을 전하는 것으로 활용하는 양상을 보인다. 서술하는 시간에서도 서사는 과거나 현재에 집중하고 본사는 현재에 집중한다면 결사는 현재에 미래까지 덧붙이는 형식을 취한다. 공간도 서사는 경주 전체를 다룬다면 본사는 구미산에 자리하고 있는 용담으로 이동하며 결사에서는 용담이 구미산의 어떤 점을 성취하고 있는지에 집중한다. 「용담가」는 몽유가사의 성격을 일정하게 갖고 있기는 하지만 적극적으로 수용하지는 않는 작품이다. 왜냐하면 작품에는 몽유가사의 기본적이고 중요한 특성인 꿈 이전- 꿈 – 꿈 이후의 세계가 구분되어 나타나지도 않으며 꿈의 세계에서 펼쳐진 대화가 구분되어 제시되는 것도 아니기 때문이다. 하지만 작품의 성격이 몽유가사의 성격을 기본적으로 가지고 있음을 위의 논의를 통해 확인할 수 있었다. 이에서 나아가 작품은 작품 창작을 할 수 있는 당대의 문화적 역량인 경북지방의 구곡문화의 보편적 배경에 따라 이에서 영향을 받아 형성되었다는 성격도 기본적으로 갖고 있다. 「용담가」는 가학의 한 방편으로 문학이 계승적 역할과 기능을 수행하던 시대를 마감하고 개인이 어떤 식으로든 가학으로 전해지던 문학의 창작동향을 변화시켜 어떤 방향을 새롭게 모색할 수 있을지를 보여준다는 의의를 갖는다. 이런 점은 개화기라는 시대에 몰락양반이 어떤 문학적 창작의 동향과 방향을 개척해 나가는지를 파악해 볼 수 있는 하나의 가능성을 보여준다는 의의까지 갖는다.
