This research seeks to understand the psychological and emotional traits of missionary candidates to enhance effectiveness in missions. There had been much concerns by missions stakeholders on the issues of premature termination of mission and maladjustment in the mission field. But there had not been studies using relevant psychological tests to find which psychological and emotional traits are especially related to missionary work. Eighty-one missionary candidates of the Presbyterian Church of Korea were selected as participants to take selected tests that would most suitably identify their personality types as well as their psychological and emotional traits. The demographic and statistical results were analyzed and compared to establish correlation. Based on the results of this study, seven negative traits of missionary candidates were analyzed, and possible remedial responses for each were suggested. The missionary apostle Paul was an example of a person overcame the seven negative traits. The traits and their remedies are: discomfort with negative emotional expressions with inner stability; introversion and extraversion with relational community; dutifulness with a sense of vocation; conventional thinking with emphasis on principles; excessive leadership with a sense of stewardship; oppressiveness with self-control; and depressiveness and aggression with mature self-awareness. The research makes practical suggestions to support the missionaries through individual care and community support. Analyzing psychological test results provides insight into missionary candidates’ psychological and emotional patterns, enabling better care for the missionaries as they adjust in the fields and cooperate as a member of the missionary organization. The results of this study will provide a basis to improve missionary training as well as the functioning of support structures, thereby stabilizing and amplifying the mission of the kingdom of God.

본 연구는 효과적인 선교사역을 위해 선교사 지원자의 심리정서적 특성을 이해하는 데 목적이 있다. 그동안 선교사역의 중지와 선교사의 현지 부적응에 관한 선교관련자들의 우려가 있었다. 하지만 이에 대해서 관련 심리검사 도구들을 통해 구체적으로 어떠한 심리정서적 특성들이 선교사역과 관련이 있는지 이해하려는 연구들은 거의 찾아보기 어려웠다. 본 연구는 예장통합 총회 선교사 지원자 81명을 연구대상으로 하였으며, 선교사 성격유형과 심리정서적 특성을 가장 잘 나타낼 수 있는 측정 도구들을 선별하여 인구통계학적인 요인들을 비교 분석하고, 측정 도구들의 검사에 따라 그 상관관계를 연구하였다. 필자는 이 결과를 근거로 선교지원자 부정적 특성을 일곱 가지로 분석하여, 그 극복 방안을 제시하였다. 부정적 특성들과 극복 대안은 부정적 감정의 표현 불편감은 내적 안정성으로, 내향 및 외향의 경향성은 관계적 공동체성으로, 당위적 사고는 소명의식으로, 관습적인 사고는 원칙과 본질의 중요성으로, 과잉 리더십은 청지기 의식으로, 감정 억압은 절제로, 우울감 및 공격성은 성숙한 자기 인식으로 극복되어야 한다. 이어서 연구결과에 대한 실천적 제안과 활용으로 개인적 돌봄과 공동체적 지원방안에 관하여 제안하였다. 그러므로 선교사의 심리검사에 따른 분석은 선교사 심리정서의 이해와 선교사 돌봄, 현장선교의 적응과 선교조직의 협력 등 다양한 측면에 도전을 줄 것이다. 따라서 본 연구를 기반으로 한 선교사 교육과 협력기관의 역할이 보완 및 변화되어 더 안정적이고 극대화된 하나님 나라 선교를 가능하게 할 것이라고 본다.
