The diplomatic exchange between Goryeo(高麗) and Song(宋) began after the founding of the Song Dynasty in 960. As Goryeo and Song were not in contact with the territory, there were not many incidents that could cause conflict, so it was not actively studied. The exchanges between Goryeo and Song in the early days of Song's founding can be seen divided before and after Song's absorption of the 10 kingdoms. While Gwang-jong(光宗) era adopted a multilateral method of diplomacy that continued public exchanges with the countries located in the southern region of the central region, Gyeong-jong(景宗) era absorbed the southern region of the central region and unified the whole country, and naturally shifted to Song-centered diplomacy. However, it is hard to say that the relationship between the two countries was very close at the beginning of the Song Dynasty. Considering that there was a time when official envoys were cut off in Gwang-jong era from 965 to 972, and Song Tai-zong(太宗)'s exclusion of Goryeo from the military alliance in the process of conquering North China, the exchange between the two countries was enough to maintain a formal relationship.

高麗와 宋의 교류는 960년 송 太祖 趙匡胤이 後周를 대신해 건국한 이후에 가서 시작되었다. 고려와 송이 영토를 접하고 있지 않은 상황이라 아무래도 갈등을 초래할 만한 사건이 그다지 존재하지 않아 활발하게 연구되지는 못했다. 송 건국 초기 고려와 송의 교류는 송이 10국을 흡수하기 전과 흡수한 이후로 나뉘는 것을 볼 수가 있다. 광종 대는 중원의 남방 지역에 위치한 국가들과도 공적인 교류를 이어가는 다자외교의 방식을 취한 반면, 경종 대는 중원 남방 지역을 흡수하여 송이 전국을 통일해 나가게 되자, 자연스레 송 중심의 외교로 전환되었다. 하지만 송 건국 초 양국의 관계는 아주 밀접했다고 보기는 어렵다. 965년부터 972년까지 광종대에 공식적인 사행의 왕래가 단절된 시기가 존재한 사례나, 송 태종이 북한을 정벌 또는 과정에서 고려를 군사 연합에서 제외한 것을 고려하면, 양국 사이의 교류는 문화적·경제적 분야에서 좀 더 활발했다고 할 수 있다.
