While it may not seem to be suitable for self-cultivation, sexual practice(fangzong, 房中) is one of the most important areas of East Asian self-cultivation. It is the academic goal of this paper to reveal the characteristics of self-cultivation theory and its position in the history of self-cultivation theory. It is the practical significance of this paper to enrich the impoverished meaning of sexual intercourse, nowadays regarded as merely a vent of desire. In this paper, we introduced literatures related to sexual practice in general, discussed how the sexual practice embodied the idea of self-cultivation, that is, the monk's own change, showed how the sexual practice contributed to the development of East Asian self-cultivation theory, and revealed traces of Laozi philosophy reflected in women's bodies.

수행과는 어울리지 않을 것처럼 보이지만, 방중은 동아시아 수행론의 중요 분야중 하나다. 방중의 수행론적 특성을 드러내고 수행론사에서 방중이 차지하는 위치를 드러내는 것이 본고의 학문적 목표다. 이 과정을 통해 단순히 욕정의 분출로만 간주되는 성교의 빈곤한 의미를 풍요롭게 만드는 것이 본고의 현실적 의의다. 본고에서는 방중문헌을 개괄적으로 분류 소개 했고, 수행론으로서 방중이 자신의 변화라는 수행의 이념을 구현한 방식을 논구했으며, 內丹으로 귀결되는 동아시아 수행론의 전개에 기여한 바를 밝혔고, 여성의 몸에 반영되어 있는 노자철학의 흔적을 드러냈다.
