The purpose of the study is to analyze the characteristics of the language on When Camellia blooms. The drama was broadcasted from September 18th, 2019 to November 21th, 2019 in 40 episodes. The drama was popular issue among people because its audience rate was increased every week. Its main story was that young man(Yongsik) and woman(Dongbak) would meet and love against so many obstacles in a fishing village so called Oongsan. There were many different views for its popularity. For example, someone said the drama was well structured with some romance and some mystery. And someone said th drama’s characters were acting excellently, like Duksun and Yongsik. Thus I wanted to know what the reason of its popularity was. I supposed that it was the play-writer’s language power which is audiovisual elements, especially auditory ones. And thus the study has taken outsiders perspectives. Then I collected the dialogues of the main characters in 40 full episodes. Then I chose the dialogues which I felt interesting and categorized it. The category is as follows :ignorance, dialects, humor or wit, utterance which is not expected or not used properly or expressions from error of their identities. The method of the study is character analysis among drama analyzing methods. For example, Dongbak, main character, has used the expression which the end of utterance is properly not done. This mothod is to analyze the characteristics of the characters through the expressions which the characters have used in the drama. In conclusions, I argue that the play writer seems to use all the elements that people feel funny and smiling, And furthermore I tried to argue that there is some significant relationship between the expressions which the main characters have used and their life background.

본 연구의 목적은 2019년에 방영된 KBS 수목 드라마 <동백꽃 필 무렵>의 언어 특성을 분석하는 것이다. <동백꽃 필 무렵>은 2019년 KBS에서 인기리에 방영되었는데 그 드라마가 인기를 끄는 이유에 대해서는 다양한 관점이 있다. 혹자는 드라마가 로맨스와 추리물 등 장르 구성을 조화롭게 구성한 점에서 그 이유를 찾고, 혹자는 배우들의 명연기에서 그 이유를 찾지만 연구자는 그 이유를 작가의 대본에 있다고 판단하였다. 그리하여 연구자가 이 연구에서 다룬 내용은 2019년 KBS TV에서 방영한 드라마 <동백꽃 필 무렵> 40회 전편에서 나오는 등장인물들의 언어이다. 그중에서 연구자가 보기에 재미있게 느껴지는 부분을 발췌해서 연구자가 고안한 범주에 따라 분류하였다. 표현상의 무지함, 사투리의 반복, 기대를 뒤집는 발언 또는 통쾌한 표현, 외래어 사용과 오용, 인식오류 등이 그것이다. 그리고 그런 용례를 보여준 대사를 드라마를 보면서 낱낱이 기록하였다. 또한 본 연구에서 사용한 연구방법은 드라마의 분석방법론 중 ‘인물분석’이다. 이것은 인물들이 쓰는 말의 특성을 통해 인물의 성격을 분석하는 방법이다. 가령 주인공 동백은 거의 언제나 말끝을 흐리는 데 그런 특성은 그녀의 삶이 엄마에게 버림받고 늘 사람들에게 소외됨으로써 충분한 사랑을 받지 못한 성격을 드러낸다. 또는 규태라는 인물의 언어는 언제나 소신이 없음을 보여준다. 성장과정에서 어머니나 아내에게 주체적인 대우를 받지 못하였기 때문이다. 그리하여 본 연구의 관심은 드라마 <동백꽃 필 무렵>의 ‘시청각적 요소’에 두었다. 그중에서도 인물들의 대사에서 시청자를 웃기거나 재미를 느끼게 하는 청각적 요소에 집중하였다. 말하자면 드라마의 다른 요소, 즉 시각적 요소에는 관심을 두지 않았다. 마지막으로 본 연구는 철저히 인물의 언어적 특성을 가지고 드라마의 내용과 인물들의 성격을 파악하는 ‘외부자적 접근법’을 취하였다.
