Christianity faces the ‘New Normal’ in the age of Covid-19. Above all, traditional religious forms of worship by gathering in the church experienced a transition to full-scale ‘untact’ form, to prevent the spread of the pandemic. Christianity, while participating in the worldwide pandemic in the realm of public domain, must also consider the issue of a religious symbol, since the communal gathering for worship, has become limited. The church is not simply a place for Christian gatherings. It possesses a characteristic of a symbolic spiritual community by sharing all religious values and forms of Christianity. The author will focus on Christianity’s symbolical world and examine the symbolism in the theology of Reinhold Niebuhr. Niebuhr, while avoiding the infringement of the authority of the bible by standing on the tradition of neo-orthodoxy. defined the realm of the ultimate meaning, which cannot be comprehended by human reason as ‘mythology,’ and understood the ‘symbol’ as a means that provides it. The author is interested in Niebuhr’s interpretation of the ‘symbol.’ He does not use the ‘symbol’ as the limited religious sign in the private domain of religion but expands its concept to organically connect the created world of God. Therefore, Niebuhr expanded and examined the symbol idea to the public domain, thereby taking into account the church’s ethical responsibility in the public domain. The author understands that Niebuhr showed the insight regarding the ‘politicality, religiosity and historicity of symbol’ through the interpretation of the symbol, and expects that Niebuhr’s contribution will provide theological insight for the reorientation of the church and theology to the essence of faith in the COVID-19 age.

코로나19(Covid-19) 시대에 기독교는 ‘새로운 일상(New Normal)’에 직면하여 있다. 무엇보다도 성전을 중심으로 모여서 예배드리는 전통적인 종교 형식이 방역의 문제로 전면적인 ‘비대면’으로 전환된 것이라고 본다. 기독교가 공적영역에서 세계적인 펜데믹(Pandemic)의 사안에 적극적으로 동참하면서도, 동시에 고려하여야 할 사안은 공동체적으로 모이는 예배의 제한으로 말미암아 종교적 상징의 문제가 발생하였다고 본다. 성전은 단지 크리스천이 모이는 장소로서의 건물이 아니라, 기독교의 모든 종교적 가치 와 형식을 공유함으로써 ‘하나님의 나라’를 형성하여 나가는 영적 공동체의 상징적 특성을 가진다. 필자는 기독교의 상징적인 세계관에 주목하며 라인홀드 니버(Reinhold Niebuhr)의 신학에서 ‘상징(symbol)’론을 검토하고자 한다. 니버는 기독교 신정통주의의 전통에 서서 성경의 권위를 침해하지 않으면서도 인간의 이 성으로 파악할 수 없는 ‘궁극적 의미(ultimate meaning)’의 영역을 ‘신화’로 정의하였으며, 이를 제공하는 수단을 ‘상징’으로 파악하였다. 필자가 관심이 있는 영역은 니버의 ‘상징’에 대한 해석인데, 살펴보겠지만 그는 ‘상징’을 종 교의 사적 영역에서 종교적 기호로 제한하는 개념으로 사용하지 않고 이를 하나님의 창조 세계를 유기적으로 연결하는 개념을 확대하였다. 따라서 니 버는 상징 개념을 공적 영역까지 확장하여 살펴봄으로써 교회의 공공영역 에서 윤리적 책임에 대한 부분까지 고려하고 있는 것을 보게 된다. 니버는 상징의 해석을 통하여 ‘상징의 정치성과 종교성, 그리고 역사성’에 대한 통 찰력을 보여주었다고 필자는 이해하며, 이러한 니버의 공헌은 코로나19 시 대 교회와 신학이 신앙의 본질로 ‘재정향(reorientation)’하기 위한 신학적 통찰력을 제시하여 줄 것으로 기대한다.
