This paper aims at investigating the emergence and vision of contemporary cultural studies, the main frame of which has been emerged around the mid-20th century. Cultural studies was an academical response to the enormous socio-cultural change in the 20th century. Under the awakening that existing classical human studies could no longer handle the complexity and the diversity of social problems successfully, it has tried to establish a unified science in a transdisciplinary way, which networks distinct human/social sciences and understands cultural realities in a submerging perspective. In english speaking world, "Cultural Studies" was proposed as a transdisciplinary study in the 60s, while in German speaking region in the 80s. under the name of "Kulturwissenschaft". It is yet to be determined how successful cultural studies might be. However, it should still be a meaningful attempt to unify the specialized, fragmented disciplines into a submerging whole, which may offer a richer account of actual human life as a cultural animal.

본 논문은 20세기 중엽쯤 논의되기 시작한 현대적 형태의 문화학의 발생과정과 앞으로의 전망을 그리고 있다. 문화학은 19세기 말부터 급변한 사회문화적 변동의 학문적 대응이었다. 고전적 형태의 인문학으로는 다양하고 복잡한 사회현실을 담아낼 수도 대처할 수도 없다는 인식 아래 각 개별 인문사회과학이 자신의 경계를 넘어 상호협력함으로써 날로 새로워지는 문화적 현실을 총체적으로 기술평가할 수 있는 종합학문으로 모색된 것이 문화학이다. 영어권에서는 ‘문화연구’가, 독일어권에서는 ‘문화학’이 하나의 대안으로 등장하여 오늘날까지도 현재진행형인 학문이 문화학이다. 문화학은 자체적으로 또 하나의 인문과학이 아니라 각 개별 인문과학들을 네트워킹하여 사회문화적 현상을 종합적으로 보려는 시도이며 이를 사회적 실천에 반영하려는 실천적 성향의 학문이다. 이의 성공가능성은 아직 미지수이나 문화학은 개별화전문화한 인문학의 상황을 반성하고 현실의 문화적 삶의 영역을 다시 획득하려는 하나의 시도로 존재의미를 가진다.
