The main purpose of this paper is to reveal the inadequacy of a semantic approach to the fact/value dichotomy, and to suggest that the nature of fact and value can be better accounted for by regarding them as ways of our experience. At the heart of the logical positivists' semantic approach lie two misleading assumptions: First, there can be a clear distinction between fact statements and value statements; secondly, a fact statement or a value statement corresponds respectively to factual experience and value experience. Along with these assumptions, logical positivist analysis ended up with the unfortunate claim that any science on value is impossible at all. Despite Searle's and Putnam's successful endeavors to refute the fact/value dichotomy, their works did not seem to amount to a richer account of the nature of value. I suggest that the nature of value can be more appropriately appreciated by taking a naturalistic stance a la Dewey, and dealing with value as part of a comprehensive account of our experience. And this richer, but never ending approach will lead us to another facet of ethical inquiry.

이 논문의 주된 목적은 사실/가치 이분법적 구분에 대한 의미론적 접근의 부적절성을 지적하고, 사실/가치의 문제가 경험의 방식들로 이해됨으로써 가치의 본성이 더 적절하게 해명될 수 있음을 보이려는 것이다. 특히 20세기의 의미론적 접근은 사실/가치 문제를 의미론적으로 재구성하는 과정에서 두 가지 그릇된 가정을 받아들이고 있다. 그것은 사실 문장과 가치 문장이 명확하게 구분될 수 있으며, 동시에 사실 문장과 가치 문장이 각각 사실 경험과 가치 경험과 일대일 대응 관계를 유지하고 있다는 것이다. 사실과 가치의 간격을 메우려는 설의 시도와 사실/가치 이분법에 대한 퍼트남의 지속적 비판은 이 문제에 관한 경험주의의 부적절성을 드러내는 데 중요한 기여를 하고 있지만 그 자체로 사실과 가치의 관계에 대한 새로운 해명에 이르지는 못한 것으로 보인다. 필자는 오히려 논리실증주의의 그릇된 가정을 넘어섬으로써 가치가 사실과의 관련성 속에서 다루어져야 할 근거를 잃게 된다고 본다. 대신에 필자는 가치가 ‘경험의 방식’이라는 관점에서 탐구될 수 있으며, 따라서 가치의 본성이 경험 구조의 일반적 해명의 일부로 다루어질 수 있다고 제안했다.
