In this article I will consider the meaning of the debate concerning the status of An Essay Towards a New Theory of Vision in Berkeley's philosophy. In this book Berkeley assumes that the objects of touch exist without the mind, but the objects of sight exist in the mind. However, in his A Treatise concerning the Principles of Human Knowledge he argues that the objects of touch as well as the objects of sight exist in the mind. Many commentators have interpreted that the disparity between two works was a kind of tactics by which Berkeley hoped his daring idealism to be received more easily. In objection to this traditional interpretation, Armstrong argues that the heterogeneity of the objects of sight and of touch shows the An Essay Towards a New Theory of Vision is independent of the A Treatise concerning the Principles of Human Knowledge. Furthermore, Atherton argues that we must read the latter through the former, then the disparity between two works will disappear, and Berkeley's idealism will be interpreted newly as the theory of visual representation which leaves Berkeley's philosophy considerably less at variance with common sense.
