What is the informal logic? What kind of “informality” it has? We can see the characteristic features of informal logic by considering the concept of argument and its evaluation. Although their diversity, some leading informal logicians, for example, Ralph Jonson, Douglas Walton, and Trudy Govier have a common position against deductivism in which deduction is only proper logic. We will start a disscussion about informal logic with anti-deductivism of these logicians. After this, the concept of argument, validity, soundness in informal logic will be examined in brief. I hope the nature and the limit of informal logic will be shed light through this exploratory work.

논증을 일상의 언어 행위 맥락에서 분리하고 않고 그 안에서 이해하려는 노력의 역사는 고대로 거슬러 올라가지만, 비교적 최근에 일상의 논증과 그 평가에 관한 활발한 논의가 다시 벌어지고 있다. 비형식 논리학자들의 시도는 이를 보여주는 좋은 실예이다. 그런데, 이 논리학자들의 논증 개념이나 논증 평가 개념은 기존의 논리학과 다른 것 같다. 여기서는 대표적인 비형식 논리학자인 존슨, 고비어, 월튼 등의 생각을 중심으로 비형식 논리학의 논증과 논증 평가 개념에 관해 살펴보고, 나아가, 이들 각각을 비판적으로 검토함으로써 비형식 논리학의 본성과 한계에 관한 이해를 얻고자 한다.
