While Dongmoo's Four-Type(四象) Theory is grounded in the Confucian notions of Sung(性) and Myung(命), he rendered those notions into wholly different contexts. The main purpose of this paper is to compare Dongmoo's interpretation of Sung-Myung with that of traditional Confucianism, thereby showing the distinctive aspects of Dongmoo's thinking. In order to do this, I compared Chushi's conception of Sung-Myung and Dongmoo's. While both Chuhsi and Dongmoo shared the Confucius-Mencius tradition, Chuhsi took a metaphysical perspective to view Sung-Myung as a Heavenly Li, but Dongmoo took a bodily centered perspective to view it as something built in our body. Dongmoo‘s view turned from a metaphysical stance toward a bodily one methodologically and its contexts were heavily grounded on a body of clinical knowledge. In this context, Dongmoo's view of Sung-Myung is regarded as an original establishment which attempts to account for a human being in a comprehensive manner by converging a metaphysical perspective and a body of medical or scientific knowledge.

동무 이제마는 사상의학의 이론적 근거를 유학의 성명(性命)에 두면서도 그 해석은 종래와는 방향을 달리한다. 이 논문의 목적은 종래 유학과 동무의 성명을 대비적으로 검토하여 그의 성명관의 독창적인 면모를 밝혀내려는 데 있다. 이러한 목적을 위해 필자는 주자의 성명관과 동무의 성명관을 비교하여 검토했다. 주자는 공맹유학을 계승하면서도 성명을 천리로 해석하여 형이상학적 관점에서 이해했다. 그러나 동무는 성명을 몸 안에 주어져 있는 것으로 해석함으로써 몸 중심의 관점에서 이해했다. 동무의 관점은 방법론적으로는 형이상학에서 몸 중심으로 선회한 것이지만 그 내용적 측면에서의 변화는 임상적 지식에 근거한 것이다. 이러한 의미에서 그의 성명관은 형이상학적 관점과 의학 또는 과학적 지식의 접목을 통해 인간을 종합적으로 해석하려는 독창적인 성과로 평가될 수 있을 것이다.
