The Allegory of the Cave in Plato's Republic discusses the last one of the three allegories concerned with the Idea of the Good. This Allegory describes how human beings can escape their circumstances and conditions and achieve truth. It mystically explains how human beings can become aware of their nature or essence through a sacrificial enlightenment. Heidegger's interpretation of the Allegory of the Cave insists on a history of the oblivion of existence which has been passed down to contemporary western philosopher. According to Heidegger's Interpretation, the meaning of original truth can only be experienced through the flux of unconcealed being moving towards rightness. The Allegory of the Cave therefore describes the upward and downward tendencies implicit within western humanism. This thesis critically investigates the appropriation of Heiddeger's interpretation through philological discussion about the conception of the truth. Additionally, this thesis will explore the fundamental intent of Heiddeger's critique of Plato's Allegory. This argument will elucidate Plato's insistance that philosopher king must have access to a pratical knowledge by which he can rule the country.

동굴의 비유는 국가 편에서 철학자가 도달해야 하는 인식의 최고단계인 좋음의 이데아를 묘사하기 위해 소개되는 세 가지 비유 중 마지막을 장식하고 있다. 이 비유는 인간이 자신의 본래적인 상황과 조건으로부터 벗어나서 진리에 도달하는 과정을 흥미롭게 묘사하고 있으며, 특히 오늘날 우리가 인간됨의 본질로 간주하는 정신의 자유가 사실은 철학자의 자기희생적인 계몽을 통해서만 가능하다는 점을 신비로운 방식으로 그려내고 있다. 현대 실존주의 철학자 하이데거는 동굴의 비유 속에, 이후 서양철학사를 관통하는 존재망각의 역사가 잉태되어 있다는 논쟁적인 해석을 내놓은 바 있다. 그에 따르면 진리의 근원적인 의미는 비은폐성(altheia)으로부터 올바름(orthots)으로 본질적인 변화를 겪게 되며, 동굴의 비유 속에서 그려지는 상승과 하강과정은 서구 휴머니즘의 이념이 담긴 교육(paideia)과정이자 인간중심주의가 싹튼 결정적인 계기가 된다. 본 논문은 하이데거 해석의 타당성 여부를 한편으로 진리개념에 대한 문헌학적인 논의를 통해서, 다른 한편으로 동굴의 비유의 기본구도와 지향점에 대한 텍스트 내재적인 고찰을 통해서 비판적으로 검토하고자 한다. 이와 같은 논의과정을 통해서, 플라톤은 동굴의 비유를 매개로 철인통치자의 국가운영에 필요한 실천적 지식의 성격을 우리가 합리적으로 납득할 수 있는 방식으로 제시하고자 했음이 자연스럽게 드러날 것이다.
