The main purpose of this paper is to analyze the reason why Rorty is considered as a philosophical relativist by scrutinizing his interpretation on Wittgenstein. The paper also aims to dissolve the relativistic problem of Rorty’s point of view from the different standpoint, what is called, experientialism. Rorty accepts Wittgenstein's point of view that philosophy is a therapeutical function and admits the abstract facet of experience embedded in the later Wittgenstein's concept, ‘form of life'. However, Rorty seems to overlook the physical aspect of experience. His interpretation on experience is inevitable since he made an effort to expand contingency of language. His theory of linguistic contingency does not offer any constraints on language use. This is the point where Rorty's view has been criticized for being relativistic. The criticism that Rorty's claim is relativistic would be dissolved if he accepted Wittgenstein's view on experience thoroughly, in which both physical and abstract aspects of experience are embedded. The dissolution of relativism can be achieved through the experiential point of view in which experience includes physical and abstract facets together.

본 논문의 주된 목적은 비트겐슈타인에 대한 로티의 해석을 검토함으로써 로티가 철학적 상대주의자라고 비판받는 원인을 분석하고, 이러한 상대주의적 난점을 체험주의적 관점에서 해소하려는 것이다. 로티는 철학이 치유적 활동이라는 비트겐슈타인의 철학관과 후기 비트겐슈타인의 ‘삶의 형식’에 담긴 경험의 추상적 층위에 대한 해석을 수용한다. 그러나 경험의 물리적 층위에 대한 고려는 간과하고 있다. 이러한 로티의 경험에 대한 해석은 자신의 ‘언어 우연성’ 논제를 전개시키기 위해서 불가피한 것으로 보인다. 그러나 ‘언어 우연성’에 관한 로티의 주장은 언어 사용의 제약 지점을 설정하지 않기 때문에 철학적 상대주의라는 비판을 불러오고 있다. 로티가 철학적 상대주의자라는 비판은 경험의 물리적 층위를 포함하고 있는 비트겐슈타인의 입장을 온전히 수용한다면 해소될 수 있을 것이다. 그리고 이에 대한 구체적인 해명은 경험이 물리적이고 추상적인 층위를 동시에 포괄한다는 체험주의적 시각을 통해서 가능하다.
