In this article, I show two themes through the investigation of Aristotle's theories of appetite and those of Aquinas's: First, their concepts of appetite do not exclude the intellectual elements, which is different from modern tradition. second, Aquinas's way to introduce Aristotle's philosophy into his own is to accommodate the latter without significant modification into former's larger system which includes almost all the traditions before the former. For these, I analyze Aristotle's theories of appetite in section two and those of Aquinas's in section three. In these processes, I show that Aristotle's appetite(ὄρεξις), wish(βούλησις), anger(θυμὸς), desire(ἐπιθυμία), determination(προαίρεσις) and deliberation(βουλευσις) are respectively reduced to appetite(appetitus), will(voluntas), irascible appetite(appetitus irascibilis), concupiscible appetite(appetitus concupiscibilis), choice(electio) and counsel(consilium) without serious changes. Aquinas's words such as desiderium, electio, intentio, liberum arbitrium, however, involve different elements from Aristotle's.

이 글에서 논자는 욕구와 관련한 아리스토텔레스의 사상이 아퀴나스에 와서 어떻게 받아들여지고 어떻게 변형되는지를 살펴봄으로써 다음 두 가지 사실을 밝힌다. 첫째, 그들의 욕구 개념이 근대이후의 욕구 개념과 달리 이성적 요소를 배제하지 않는 개념이라는 것. 둘째, 아퀴나스는 아리스토텔레스를 받아들임에 있어 그전의 모든 철학·신학적 사상을 모두 받아들여 자기 스스로 세운 커다란 집의 가장 중요한 한 부분에 아리스토텔레스 사상을 거의 원형 그대로 받아들여 위치시켰다는 점. 이를 위해 제 2절에서는 아리스토텔레스의 욕구 개념과 그와 관련한 체계를 살펴보고, 제 3절에서는 아리스토텔레스와의 비교 속에서 아퀴나스의 욕구 개념과 그 체계를 살펴본다. 이 과정에서 아리스토텔레스의 욕구(ὄρεξις) 개념이 아퀴나스의 욕구(appetitus)로, 욕구의 세 종류인 소망(βούλησις), 기개(θυμὸς), 육욕(ἐπιθυμία)은 의지(voluntas), 분노적 욕구(appetitus irascibilis), 욕망적 욕구(appetitus concupiscibilis)로, 결정(προαίρεσις)과 숙고(βουλευσις)는 선택(electio)과 숙고(consilium)로 대체되었다는 것을 본다. 그러나 desiderium, electio, intentio, liberum arbitrium이라는 용어에 있어 아리스토텔레스와는 다른 측면들이 발견된다.
