The main purpose of this paper is to read Confucian moral theory in terms of pragmatism. Pragmatism refuses the traditional philosophy that claims objective moral principles and suggests the possibility of new moral investigation to go beyond them. This pragmatic view allows us to reinterpret Confucian moral theory in the contemporary view. First of all, this paper shows the compatibility between Confucianism and pragmatism in some parts that reveal Confucian thought to be construed as pragmatism. This paper will also consider the need to change the point of view in order to deal with the difficulty of reading Confucius in terms of pragmatism rather than considering it as a philosophical challenge. Confucian moral theory is similar to Dewey's philosophy, which stresses on an open system of value in that it maintains harmony with circumstances and variability in order to produce the best consequences. However, Confucian philosophy has apparently deviated from Dewey's, which does not preferentially put emphasis on any values in that it emphasizes the certain values of benevolence, righteousness, propriety, and wisdom. This does not mean that it is impossible to associate Confucianism with pragmatism. That is because the values of benevolence, righteousness, propriety, and wisdom are also applicable for pragmatism as well as Confucianism. The point is that when Confucianism is interpreted in the perspective of pluralism instead of objectivism and as a recommendatory moral instead of a compulsory one, it gives the better suggestion to those living in a pluralistic society along with various values.

이 논문의 주된 목적은 공자 도덕이론을 듀이의 실용주의적 관점에서 읽는 것이다. 실용주의는 객관적 도덕원리를 제안하는 절대주의적 전통 철학을 비판하고, 그것을 넘어서는 새로운 도덕적 탐구의 가능성을 제안한다. 이러한 실용주의적 견해는 공자의 도덕이론을 현대적으로 재해석할 수 있는 길을 열어준다. 먼저 실용주의적 읽기가 가능한 지점에서는 공자와 실용주의 사이의 친화성을, 실용주의적 읽기가 곤란한 지점에서는 그 난점의 본질이 해결할 수 없는 철학적 난제가 아니라 시각의 변화를 요구하는 것임을 드러낼 것이다. 공자의 도덕은 시･공간적 조건에서 최선의 결과를 도출하기 위해 시중성, 가변성을 견지한다는 점에서 가치의 열린 체계를 강조하는 듀이의 관점과 유사하다. 하지만 공자는 인의예지라는 특정 덕목을 강조한다는 점에서 어떤 가치에도 우위성을 설정하지 않는 듀이의 사유와 표면적으로 어긋난다. 그러나 이 점은 공자와 실용주의 사유와의 소통 불가능을 의미하는 것은 아니다. 왜냐하면 인의예지라는 덕목은 실용주의에서도 여전히 유용한 것이기 때문이다. 다만 실용주의는 공자 도덕이론에 대해 절대주의적 시각보다는 다원주의적 시각으로, 금지의 도덕보다는 권고의 도덕으로 해석할 때 다양한 가치가 혼재하는 지금 우리에게 더 나은 지평을 제공할 수 있다고 본다.
