There are two kinds of considerations to the question of why we regret what has already happened and thus cannot be altered: descriptive and normative. Psychological researches focus on the descriptive aspect of the problem of rationality of regrets, leaving important normative questions on regrets unanswered. By comparing two opposite philosophical thoughts on rationality of regrets represented by Williams and Spinoza, Bittner claims that having regrets on what one did is not rational. He admits the premise that negative emotional state is detachable from counterfactual thinking. I will argue that even if this premise is admitted there is still rationality in having regrets.

‘왜 우리는 이미 일어난 일에 대해 후회하는가?’라는 물음은 후회의 기술적 측면과 규범적 측면에 대한 고찰을 모두 요구한다. 심리학은 후회라는 감정의 기술적 측면을 다루지만, 규범적 물음, 특히 후회의 합리성에 관한 규범적 질문을 간과하고 있다. 비트너는 후회의 합리성에 관한 두 상반된 입장을 윌리엄스와 스피노자를 통해 살펴보면서 결국 후회를 하는 것은 합리적이지 못하다고 주장한다. 비트너는 부정적인 감정 상태가 반드시 반사실적 사고와 결합될 필요가 없다는 전제를 받아들인다. 하지만 이 논문은 이 전제를 받아들인다고 하더라도 후회에는 합리적 측면이 있다는 것을 후회에 대한 분석을 통해 주장한다.
