A law consists of a single statement. It is a general, necessary, synthetic, and highly confirmed statement. It is controversial whether truth is a requirement of a law. According to an instrumentalist, a scientific theory is merely an instrument for making future predictions. Hempel claims that a scientific theory is composed of internal principles and bridge principles. A logical positivist asserts that theoretical terms of a scientific theory can be translated into observational terms, and a scientific theory is a collection of statements. A semanticist, on the other hand, holds that a scientific theory is a collection of models. The semantic view of scientific theories has the following absurd consequences: the axioms of the past theories that turned out to be false are true, Aristotle's correspondence theory of truth is false, a model is both a truth-maker and truth-bearer, both an axiom and a model are a truth-bearer, and a part of the world is a part of a scientific theory.

과학에서 법칙은 단 하나의 진술로 구성되어 있으며, 일반진술이고, 필연적 진술이며, 종합적 진술이고, 고도로 입증되었다. 법칙이 진리이어야 하는지에 대해서는 논란이 있다. 법칙에는 보편법칙과 확률법칙, 관찰법칙과 이론법칙이 있다. 도구론자에 의하면, 과학이론은 미래사건을 예측하는 도구에 불과하다. Hempel에 의하면, 과학이론은 내적원리와 교량원리로 구성되어 있다. 논리실증주의자들에 의하면, 과학이론의 이론용어는 관찰용어로 번역될 수 있으며 과학이론은 문장들의 합이다. 이에 반해 의미론자들은 과학이론이 모델들의 합이라고 주장한다. 의미론적 견해가 옳다면, 과학사에서 허위로 드러난 과학이론들의 공리들은 모두 진리이고, 아리스토텔레스의 진리에 대한 대응론은 그르며, 모델은 truth-maker이면서 동시에 truth-bearer이고, 공리와 모델이 모두 truth-bear이며, 세계의 일부가 이론의 일부이다. 이런 불합리한 결론들이 도출되므로 의미론적 견해는 수용될 수 없다.
