The purpose of this study was to understand the history of the professional establishment of music therapy in Korea by looking into the developmental paths of the two pioneer music therapists who were educated and trained in Korean culture. The research data were collected through multiple in-depth interviews with the participants, which was then and analyzed using the life history research method to incorporate sociocultural perspectives into the research findings. As a results, four domains including, “encountering with music,” “entering the career path of a music therapist,” “strengthening their position as music therapists,” and “role as a pioneer music therapist” were derived along with 9 relevant categories through a holistic-content approach. The research outcome provides valuable information not only on how music therapy was introduced and developed in Korea academically and professionally but also on future directions in music therapy.

본 연구의 목적은 한국에서 음악치료 교육을 받은 1세대 음악치료사들의 삶을 통해 국내 음악치료 학문의 정착과 발달 배경을 이해하고, 그들의 전문적 발달 여정을 살펴보는 것이다. 이를 위하여 연구자는 두 명의 한국 음악치료 선구자를 대상으로 심층면담을 진행하였고, 생애사 연구방법으로 분석하여 사회문화적 환경 의 맥락과 함께 탐색하고자 하였다. 이 연구는 총체적 내용 접근으로 전문성 발달과 의미에 대한 코딩 및 범주화를 통하여 최종적으로 9개의 범주와 함께 ‘음악과 조우하기,’ ‘음악치료사의 길로 들어서기,’ ‘음악치료 사로 바로서기,’ ‘1세대 음악치료사로서 역할하기’ 등 4개의 영역이 도출되었다. 이 연구의 결과는 국내 음악 치료의 학문적, 직업적 정착과 발전과정에 대한 귀중한 정보를 제공하며, 앞으로 한국 음악치료가 발전해나 가야 할 방향성을 제시한다.
