To present day political philosophy has been alienated from political reality and oriented toward abstract pure theory. This orientation has two historical backgrounds. One is the enduring perspective that comprehends politics in light of metaphysical philosophy. The other is that the markets, which pertained to the private realm before the modern era, encroached the public realm. In this context, politics has been misunderstood as a metaphysics, derivative of economy, or an instrument to achieve goals. Politics is not anymore thought of as an exclusive domain of human affairs, and political philosophy’s distinct status became dubious. And as a result, in human life the proportion of publicness has been greatly contracted. Political philosophy must derive the principles for politics solely from political phenomena, not from academic domain or other aspects of human life. To do this, we require a desirable boundary of political philosophy that begins from and relates to ‘the political’, the indigenous conditions of human existence. Fundamental question of political philosophy within such a boundary is ‘the uniqueness of politics.’ And the uniqueness of politics is none other than the human existential publicness.

그간 학계의 정치철학은 정치 현실과 동떨어진 공허한 순수 이론에 머물러 왔다. 그것은 두 가지 큰 역사적 배경에 기인한다. 첫째, 고대 이래 정치를 형이상학적 철학으로부터 기초 지으려는 발상이 오래도록 이어져 왔다. 둘째, 근대 이후 사적 영역의 속성이었던 경제가 공적인 영역을 잠식하였다. 이런 역사적 배경 속에서 정치는 형이상학이나 경제의 부수 영역이나 다른 목적 성취를 위한 수단의 지위로 오해되었다. 정치는 인간사의 독자적인 영역이 아니라고 생각되었고, 정치철학은 고유한 지위를 의심받게 되었다. 그리고 그 결과 인간의 삶에서 공공성의 비중은 크게 위축되었다. 정치철학은 다른 인간 삶과 학문 영역에서 정치의 기준을 도출하지 말고 오직 정치 현상으로부터 정치의 기준을 도출하는 순수한 정치적 철학이어야 한다. 이를 위해서는 인간 실존의 고유한 조건으로서의 ‘정치적인 것’에서 출발하고 관계하는 정치철학의 바람직한 경계 설정이 필요하다. 이러한 경계 내에 자리한 정치철학의 근본문제는 ‘정치의 고유성’이고, 정치의 고유성이란 다름 아닌 ‘인간의 실존적 공공성’이다.
