I try to classify tendencies with two kinds which is distorted when modern’s identity is discussed. The first is the escaping toward the self and the second is the escaping from the self. The former is a propensity toward the inner self(mystical psychologism) and a propensity toward outward appearance self(a plastic operation, diet etc.) and the latter is on mazochism, toxication, neurosis symptoms and the problems of the multi-egos of cyber space. Although such various actual conditions is the thing which in any era can happen, some phenomenon have something to do with the dissolution of the subject which postmodernism requests and with the development of scientific technology, especially the advancement of the computer and the internet. I analyse the situations which in the view of image draw crisis on the identity of moderns. Today’s capitalism culture control the bodies and desires of moderns using the image. It is necessary to pursue which is integrated into one mind-body beyond the image in order not to be controlled by today’s distorted culture.

현대인들의 정체성을 논함에 있어서 ‘자기’에 대해 왜곡된 방식으로 접근하는 경향들을 크게 두 가지로 분류해 보았다. 첫째는 ‘자기’에로의 도피이며, 둘째는 ‘자기’로부터 도피이다. ‘자기’에로의 도피는 내적 자기로의 편향성(신비주의적 심리주의)과 외양적 자기로의 편향성(성형, 다이어트 등 몸적 속성을 자기와 동일시)을 짚어 보고, ‘자기’로부터의 도피는 마조히즘, 중독, 신경증 증상, 사이버 공간의 다중자아의 문제들로 제시해 보았다. 이러한 제반 현상들은 어느 시대에나 있을 수 있는 것들이지만, 일부 현상들은 현대사회의 과학기술 발달 - 특히 컴퓨터와 인터넷의 발달 –그리고 포스트모더니즘이 요구하는 주체 해체와 관계가 있다는 것이다. 필자는 상의 관점에서 현대인들의 정체성을 위기로 이끄는 국면들을 분석해 보았다. 오늘날 자본주의 문화는 이러한 상을 이용하여 현대인들의 몸과 욕망을 통제한다. 왜곡된 문화에 휘둘리지 않기 위해서는 상을 넘어서서 몸과 정신이 통합된 <몸적 자기>를 추구하는 것이 필요하다.
