This paper tries to understand Xunzi’s normative theory in terms of the consideration(恕). The consideration that Mengzi suggests, emotional basics such as moral sorrow is emphasized. On the contrary, the consideration in Xunzi’s moral philosophy put stress on reflective thinking with cognitive calculation. The consideration in Mengzi’s moral phlisophy stress importance to empathy on suffering, whereas The consideration in Xunzi’s moral theory assume that conflicts and discords between a variety of needs are always a problem. Therefore, Xunzi underscores reflective thinking with cognitive calculation in restraining and controling needs. Emotion in Mengzi’s theory of human nature works primarily and immediately in everyday life, and is considered as warmth. On the other hand, Cognitive reflection that Xunzi emphasizes is regarded as the secondary, utilitarian judgments with a cool-headed and acute criterion. The two are moral. But Xunzi’s normative theory have the acute and cold image, while Mungzi’s moral theory is warm.

이 글은 순자의 규범 이론을 서(恕)의 관점에서 이해하려는 것이다. 맹자의 서는 도덕적 슬픔과 같은 정서적 기초를 강조한다. 이에 반해, 순자의 서는 인지적 계산을 동반하는 반성적 사고를 강조한다. 맹자의 서는 타인의 고통에 대한 감정이입에 중점을 두지만, 순자의 서는 다양한 욕구의 충돌과 갈등을 가정하고, 그것의 억제와 조절을 위한 공리주의적 계산을 동반하는 인지적 사유를 강조하고 있다. 일상생활에서 맹자적인 정서는 일차적이고 직접적이며, ‘따듯한’ 것으로 받아들여지는 반면에 순자적인 인지적 반성은 이차적이고 ‘차가우며 날카로운’ 경계를 가지는 공리적 판단들로 받아들여진다. 둘 다 도덕적이지만, 맹자의 도덕 이론은 따듯한 반면, 순자의 이론은 날카롭고 차가운 이미지를 갖는다.
