In this paper, I want to argue three points. First, academic debate is the most effective way to develop critical thinking. Second, we need to focus more on deduction and induction methods on the training of students in debate class. Finally, in its applications, Toulmin’s model of argument has some limitations in academic debate. Regarding the last point, I will do three things in a detailed manner. First, I will give a brief analysis of Toulmin’s model of argument. Then I will point out some examples of misunderstandings and misuses of the model in the textbooks being used in Korea. Finally, I will show we have no particular reasons to believe that Toulmin’s model of argument, when we consider its original forms, is more effective than deduction or induction methods especially in university debate classes.

이 글에서 주장하려는 바는 세 가지이다. 첫째, 토론 수업은 비판적 사고력을 기르는데 가장 적절한 방식이며, 둘째 토론 수업에서는 연역논증이나 귀납논증을 중점적으로 교육해야 한다. 그리고 셋째, 토론 수업에서 툴민의 논증 모형의 역할은 매우 제한적이다. 특히 세 번째 논점과 관련 필자는 먼저, 툴민 모형을 간략히 소개한 후, 그것을 토대로 그 모형을 다룬 국내 교재들의 오해와 오용을 검토한다. 그 다음으로, 툴민 모형은 그 본래 취지를 고려할 경우, 특히 대학의 토론 수업에서는 연역 혹은 귀납에 비해 더 효과적이라고 볼 이유가 없다고 주장한다.
