One of the most intriguing debates over Henry Sidgwick’s final thoughts in his Methods of Ethics is about the relationship between Intuitional and Utilitarian methods. The crucial question among influential scholars is whether he attempted to reject the authority of the Intuitive morality altogethr as a way of defending Utilitarianism or he wanted at heart to seek a suitable way of reconciling the two methods. On the one hand, those holding the former reading have often put stresses on the fact that Sidgwick concludes in Book Ⅲ of his Methods of Ethics that the chief principles of Intuitive morality cannot satisfy the four conditions of self-evidence, laid down by him, and further regarded his proof of Utilitarianism developed in Book Ⅳ as a purely negative ad hominem argument to force anyone, Intuitionist or Egoist, who holds other principles to admit the superiority of Utilitarian principles. On the other hand, those holding the latter reading have mainly attended to the fact that Sidgwick attempts to derive the fundamental principles of his Utilitarianism from Philosophical intuitions and suggests the Principle of Utility as a ‘principle of synthesis’ that is fundamentally meant to support the rules of Intuitive morality. What I shall try to do in this paper is to determine, in favor of the latter reading, the true implication of Sidgwick’s own statements that his Utilitarianism is “on an Intuitional basis” and that Intuitive morality is “at least unconsciously Utilitarian.” In the course of doing this, I shall also examine different interpretations of his Philosophical Intuitionism, and consider the question of what status or authority he conferred on the rules of Intuitive morality.

『윤리학의 방법들』에서 헨리 시즈위크의 궁극적인 입장에 관한 첨예한 논쟁들 중 하나는 직관주의와 공리주의의 관계에 대한 논쟁이다. 논쟁의 핵심은 그가 직관주의 혹은 상식 도덕의 권위를 부정함으로써 공리주의를 옹호하는 전략을 취했는가, 아니면 직관주의와 공리주의의 화해를 모색했는가 하는 물음이다. 전자의 해석은 주로 『윤리학의 방법들』 제3권에서 시즈위크가 직관주의 도덕의 주요 원칙들이 자신이 설정한 자명성의 조건들을 만족시킬 수 없다는 결론을 내린 점에 주목하고, 제4권에서 전개된 공리주의의 증명을 직관주의자들에게 공리주의를 받아들이도록 강요하는 순전히 부정적인 ‘대인 논증’으로 간주한다. 이에 반해, 후자의 해석은 시즈위크가 철학적 직관들에 대한 고찰로부터 자신의 공리주의의 근본 원칙을 도출하며, 공리의 원칙을 직관주의 도덕의 규칙들을 보완하는 ‘종합의 원칙’으로 제시했다는 점에 주목한다. 이 논문에서 필자는 후자의 해석을 변호하기 위하여, 자신의 윤리이론은 “직관주의적 토대에 기초한” 공리주의라는 선언과 직관주의 도덕은 적어도 “무의식적으로는 공리주의적”이라는 선언의 진의를 밝히고자 한다. 그 과정에서 그의 철학적 직관주의에 대한 상이한 해석들을 고찰하고, 그가 직관주의 도덕의 규칙들에 어떤 지위를 부여했는가 하는 물음을 살펴볼 것이다.
