The main aim of this paper is to account for the symbolic nature of communication from the experientialist perspective. It has long been said in the objectivist tradition that communication is a matter of exchanging “objective meanings” with each other. Instead, I have found the original source of symbolic experience in the incarceratedness of our experience, and thus, view the nature of communication as ex-carcerating activity in order to escape from the incarceratedness. This, in turn, implies that any ex-carcerating activity can be done only through a symbolic channel. Therefore, I attempt to explain the nature of communication in terms of symbolic structure. Drawing on the experientialist view, I try to account for the structure of symbolic experience in terms of “symbolic mapping,” which shows how communication is doomed to be indeterminate by nature. If this account is correct, we may suspect that the objectivist views of communication have been grounded on a misleading assumption. However, on the collapse of objectivism, the remaining task is to explain how our practical communication is performed beyond the nihilistic threat. To meet this task, I turn to the commonality revealed at the bodily/physical level of human experience, and argue that symbolic indeterminacy is substantially constrained by it to an intelligible extent.

이 논문의 주된 목적은 의사소통의 본성을 기호적으로 해명하려는 것이다. 객관주의적 시각에서 의사소통은 객관적 의미의 상호적 교환으로 이해되었다. 필자는 기호적 경험의 본성을 ‘경험의 유폐성’에서 찾았으며, 의사소통이 이 유폐성을 벗어나려는 유기체의 탈유폐적 활동이라고 보았다. 경험의 유폐성이 의미하는 것은 그것을 벗어나려는 모든 시도가 ‘기호적’으로 이루어질 수밖에 없다는 사실을 함축한다. 따라서 모든 의사소통은 기호적 구조 안에서 해명되어야 한다. 필자는 체험주의적 시각을 통해 기호적 경험의 구조를 ‘기호적 사상’이라는 기제를 통해 해명하려고 했으며, 그 결과 의사소통이 본성상 불확정적일 수밖에 없다는 점을 밝혔다. 이러한 논의는 객관주의적 의사소통 이론이 근원적으로 부적절한 가정에 근거하고 있다는 것을 함축한다. 객관주의적 이론의 거부와 함께 제기되는 과제는 허무주의적 귀결을 넘어서서 실제적으로 이루어지는 의사소통의 구조를 밝히는 일이다. 필자는 기호 산출과 해석에 개입되는 불투명성이 우리 경험이 신체적/물리적 층위에서 드러내는 ‘공공성’에 의해 이해 가능한 수준으로 제약되어 있다는 사실에 주목했으며, 그것이 허무주의적 분기에 대한 실제적 제약이 된다고 제안했다. 즉 현재와 같은 몸을 가진 유기체로서 인간의 경험에서 드러나는 공공성이 바로 이 제약의 근거를 이루고 있다는 것이다.
