This paper attempts to account of the relation between resentment and the source of morality in terms of pragmatic naturalism. To do this, I will examine the theories of moral sentiments and their limitation. They suggest moral sentiments come from our disposition. And they regard empathy or sympathy as the source of morality. However, although sentiments are necessary condition for moral experience, they could not be the objective basis of morality because of their subjectivity. This paper, therefore, suggest that resentment should be focused as a moral sentiment because resentment indicates the source of morality. The reason why resentment is more important than sympathy in moral experience is that it related not to “ideal”, but to “harm.” Prohibiting harm to others is higher priority than pursuing ideal values like sympathy. According to pragmatic naturalism, human organism is the source of morality. Therefore, causing harm to others and their living conditions is considered as immoral and thus resentment should be triggered and restricted by it.

이 논문의 주된 목적은 분노가 정당화되는 근거가 도덕성의 원천에 달려있다는 것을 해명하려는 것이다. 이러한 작업을 위해서 도덕 감정론자들의 이론과 그것의 한계를 검토할 것이다. 그들은 우리의 기질로부터 오는 도덕 감정들 가운데 공감이나 동정심을 도덕성의 원천이라고 보았다. 그러나 도덕적 경험에 있어서 감정이 필수적이라고 할지라도 상대적 변이를 갖는 감정 자체가 도덕성의 객관적 근거가 될 수는 없다. 따라서 이 논문은 분노에 주목한다. 분노는 도덕적 경험에 필수적인 감정일 뿐만 아니라 도덕성의 원천을 지시하기 때문이다. 분노가 도덕적 경험에서 중요한 까닭은 그것이 ‘이상’이 아니라 ‘해악’에 관계하기 때문이다. 즉 타인에 대한 해악을 금하는 것이 동정심과 같은 이상적 가치를 실현하는 일에 앞선다. 실용주의적 자연주의에 따르면, 유기체로서의 인간이 도덕성의 원천이다. 그러므로 타인과 그의 생존 조건 대한 해악은 비도덕적인 것으로 간주된다. 분노는 그러한 해악에 근거해서 촉발되거나 제약되어야 한다.
