According to Scheffler, the reasons of partiality are primarily composed of relationship-dependent reasons and project-dependent reasons. If we non-instrumentally value a certain relationship, we have the former kind of reasons, while if we non-instrumentally value a project, we come to have the latter kind of reasons. Scheffler maintains that even though these two kinds of reasons constitute the same category of partiality, they have a different normative force for agents: even if we are required to act upon relationship-dependent reasons, we are only permitted to act upon project-dependent reasons. This different normativity consists in the fact that in the case of relationship-dependent reasons, if one participant of the given relationship fails to comply with those reasons, another participant is able to legitimately complain such a failure; the same story does not hold in the case of project-dependent reasons. I analyze this argument in terms of non-reductionism about special responsibilities that Scheffler develops elsewhere, and argue that it is open to two main objections. On the one hand, the argument in question undermines the very character of reasons of partiality, i.e., being partial. On the other hand, the same argument should be either revised or rejected, because it has what I call the problem of internal inconsistency. Lastly, I argue that on some interpretation of Scheffler's reductionist argument it implies that relationship-dependent reasons should be sensitive to moral reasons. But I show that this would not help to strengthen the argument in question.
