Michel Walzer's concept of Justice criticizes not the exclusive possession of social goods, but the social alchemy in which man can possess various social goods through the possession of one good, namely the dominant good. This concept of justice is important, because it offers the conceptual frame with which man criticizes the social polarization that reaches from the intimate sphere to the political, the social and the cultural sphere. But if we take notice of not the practical, but the theoretical sense of his justice-concept, it reveals the ambiguity which is caused by the two different interpretations: Walzer's concept of justice has a universalistic position if man criticizes social dominance on its basis, otherwise it has a relativistic position if man criticizes on its basis the modern society in which the dominant good destroys the social plurality. I will explain Walzer's concept of justice and shows how man criticizes on its basis the contemporary society and what kind of the alternative it offers. For this I will explain the complex justice and its relation with the modern society. In conclusion I will examine its theoretical position.

마이클 왈쩌의 정의관은 사회적 재화의 독점이 아니라, 특정한 사회적 재화가 지배적 역할을 수행함으로써 이를 통해 여타의 사회적 재화 역시 획득하게 되는 ‘사회적 연금술’을 비판한다. 이런 그의 정의관이 특히 주목할 만하다면 그 이유는 오늘날 비단 경제적 영역뿐만 아니라, 친밀성 영역에서부터 정치적, 사회적, 문화적 영역에 이르는 광범위한 불평등이 서로 결합되면서 나타나는 사회적 양극화 현상과 이로 인한 무한 경쟁, 그리고 공동체 붕괴 위기를 비판할 수 있는 적절한 개념 틀을 제공하기 때문이다. 그러나 왈쩌의 정의관이 갖는 실천적 의미가 아니라, 이론적 위상을 따져본다면 이는 상호 모순적인 두 가지 해석 갈래를 맴도는 모호성을 드러낸다. 즉 왈쩌의 정의관은 지배적 재화를 통해 사회적 지배가 발생하는 모든 사회를 비판할 수 있는 보편주의적 정의관으로서의 위상을 갖는 것인지, 아니면 단지 지배적 재화의 등장을 통해 다양한 사회적 영역의 자율성이 파괴되는 현대사회를 비판하는 상대주의적 정의관으로서의 위상을 갖는 것이지 모호하다는 것이다. 본 글은 무엇보다도 마이클 왈쩌의 정의관을 설명하면서 왜 이런 정의관이 현대 사회를 비판하는 데 적합한 규범적 틀인지를 밝히는데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 본 글은 우선 그의 정의관의 핵심이라고 할 수 있는 ‘다원적 정의’ 개념을 설명하고, 왜 그의 다원적 정의관이 현대 사회 비판에 적합한 준거 틀인지를 설명하기 위해 이것과 현대 사회와의 연결점을 해명할 것이다.
