In recent years, numerous attempts have been made by analytic philosophers to naturalize various different domains of philosophical inquiry. Since W. V. Quine’s recommendation to naturalized epistemology, analytic philosophers have stressed the need for naturalization of various areas of philosophy, including epistemology, philosophy of mind, philosophy of science, ethics, and philosophy of art etc. All these attempts have had the common goal of rendering these areas of philosophy amenable to empirical methods. So, naturalism probably constitutes mainstream opinion in contemporary analytic philosophy. Why do most analytic philosophers accept naturalism? Why are other philosophers―especially in Continental Europe―convinced that it is not possible to be a committed analytic philosophers and at the same time anti-naturalist? What is the relation between analytic philosophy and naturalism? Is there a inner connection between analytic philosophy and naturalism?This paper argues that there is no inner connection between being an analytic philosopher and being a naturalist. Of course, most analytic philosophers today are naturalists. Likewise, most naturalists are analytic philosophers. This fact, however, is a contingent matter. I argue that there is no inner connection between analytic philosophy and naturalism, citing van Inwagen’s ‘analytic philosophy without naturalism as grounds. Finally, I introduce H.-J. Golck’s conception of analytic philosophy as one of proper concepts of analytic philosophy. And then, I reexamine the relation between analytic philosophy and naturalism.

최근에 분석철학자들은 철학적 탐구의 다양한 영역을 자연화하려는 시도를 해오고 있다. 이른바 “자연화된 인식론”(naturalized epistemology)에 대한 콰인의 천거 이후 분석철학자들은 인식론은 물론이고, 심리철학, 과학철학, 윤리학, 예술철학 등 철학의 다양한 분야들을 자연화해야 한다는 목소리를 높이고 있다. 이러한 자연화 시도들은 모두 철학의 이 다양한 영역들을 경험적 방법에 따르게 한다는 공동의 목표를 가지고 있다. 그래서 다양한 자연화 프로그램이 마치 유행처럼 하나의 커다란 흐름을 이루면서 최근 분석철학자들은 다양한 방식으로 자연주의를 승인하고 있는 것처럼 보인다. 이러한 분위기 속에서 어떤 철학자들은 자연주의가 아예 현대 분석철학의 주류 의견을 형성하고 있다고 보고 있다. 그렇다면 왜 대부분의 분석철학자는 자연주의를 승인하는가? 다른 철학자들, 특히 유럽 철학자들이 보기에 왜 분석철학자는 열렬한 분석철학자이면서 동시에 반자연주의자가 되는 것이 가능하지 않은 것처럼 보이는가? 분석철학과 자연주의의 관계는 무엇인가? 분석철학과 자연주의는 내적 연관성이 있는가?이 논문은 분석철학과 자연주의 사이에 아무런 내적 연관성이 없으며, 설령 대부분의 분석철학자가 자연주의자가 된다 할지라도 그것은 우연적 문제일 뿐이라고 주장한다. 그 과정에서 필자는 반 인와겐(P. van Inwagen)의 “자연주의 없는 분석철학” 견해를 필자 주장의 논거로 끌어들이면서, 자연주의를 포함한 특정 신조들을 토대로 “분석철학”을 규정하려는 시도를 반대할 것이다. 더 나아가 필자는 신조적 분석철학 개념에 대한 대안으로 글로크(H.-J. Glock)의 가족 유사성 개념과 역사적․발생적 개념이 결합된 분석철학 개념을 제시하고, 이를 토대로 분석철학과 자연주의 사이의 관계를 재검토할 것이다.
