It has been widely accepted among philosophers that theories of possible worlds, which attempt to explain the notion of ‘possible world', can be divided into two groups. The one is Modal Realism according to which possible worlds really exist and the universe we live in is just one of them. And the other is Modal Actualism Which considers possible worlds as abstract entities which exist in the actual world. However, Chihara thought that Forbes's theory, Rozen's Modal Fictionalism and Chihara's theory can not belong to either Modal Realism or Modal Actualism. Since these three theories hold anti-realistic view concerning possible worlds and possible objects. In this repect, Chihara tried to supply a new way of dividing theories of possible worlds. According to him, theories of possible worlds can be divided into Modal Realism and Anti-Modal Realism and the above mentioned three theories belong to Anti-Modal Realism. However, I think that Chihara's new way of dividing theories of possible worlds could not be justified. Because both Forbes's theory and Rozen's Modal Fictionalism have serious innate probems and Chihara's theory can be considered as a kind of Modal Actualism.

가능세계의미론의 핵심 개념들인 ‘가능세계’와 ‘가능개체’를 설명하는 이론들을 가능세계이론들이라 하는데, 전통적으로 가능세계이론들은 양상실재론과 양상현실론으로 구분되어왔다. 그러나 가능세계이론들에 대한 전통적인 구분방식은 최근에 들어와 어려움에 직면하고 있다. 포브스, 로젠 치하라 등에 의해 양상명제들을 의미론적으로 해석하는 새로운 시도들이 제시되었는데 이들은 모두 어떤 형태이든 가능세계의 존재 자체를 인정하지 않는다고 주장하기 때문이다. 이러한 맥락에서 치하라는 가능세계이론들을 양상실재론과 반양상실재론으로 구분하는 새로운 분류방식을 제시하고 있다. 그의 분류에 따르면 전통적인 분류상 양상실재론과 양상현실론에 속하는 모든 가능세계이론들은 양상실재론에 속한다. 반면에 가능세계의 존재를 부정하는 이론들인 포브스, 로젠, 치하라의 이론들은 반양상실재론에 속한다. 그러나 가능세계이론들을 양상실재론과 반양상실재론으로 구분하는 치하라의 분류방식은 정당성을 얻기 힘들 것으로 보인다. 포브스의 이론과 로젠의 양상허구론은 이론의 성립 자체를 위협하는 근본적인 내재적 문제를 안고 있고 치하라릐 이론은 전통적인 분류상 양상현실론의 일종인 비구성주의적 양상현실론으로 분류될 수 있기 때문이다.
