The aim of this paper is to present the history of Hegel's acceptance in the United States and analyze the trends of the Hegelian renaissance in the United States. The acceptance of Hegel in the United States begins with the St. Louis Hegelian at the end of the 19th century. This philosophical movement accepts Hegel's philosophy as a socio-political thought that can reform society, not absolute ideological idealism, which is a feature of American Hegelian philosophy. Today, the Hegel study in the United States can be divided into two trends: the Neo-pragmatic Hegelian reading led by language analyst philosophers and the non-metaphysical Hegelian analysis led by Hegelian researchers. These two trends, however, are not separate, but are mutually evolving and influencing each other. In the 21st century, there is a tendency to faithfully translate and annotate the original text of Hegel, and to bring Hegel to the present debate. Today, the Hegelian Renaissance in the English language speaking, including the United States, can be understood as the emergence of the Anglo-Saxon Hegelian school.

이 글의 목적은 미국의 헤겔 수용의 역사를 개관하여 현재 미국에서 진행되고 있는 헤겔르네상스의 동향을 소개함으로써 21세기 한국의 현실에서 헤겔 해석의 방향을 모색하는 데 하나의 사례를 제공하고자 하는 것이다. 미국에서의 헤겔 수용은 19세기 말 세인트루이스 헤겔리안으로부터 시작한다. 이 철학운동은 헤겔철학을 절대주의 관념론으로가 아니라 사회를 개혁할 수 있는 사회정치사상으로 받아들인다. 이는 이후 미국의 헤겔철학 연구의 한 특징을 이루게 된다. 오늘날 미국의 헤겔연구는 언어분석철학자들이 주도하는 신실용주의적 헤겔 읽기와 헤겔연구자들이 주도하는 비형이상학적 헤겔해석이라는 두 경향으로 나눠 볼 수 있다. 그러나 이 두 경향은 분리되어 있는 것이 아니라 서로 영향을 주고받으면서 상호발전하고 있다. 21세기에 들어서는 헤겔 원전에 대한 번역 주석이 충실히 이루어지고 헤겔을 현재적 논쟁에 끌어들이는 경향도 나타난다. 오늘날 미국을 비롯한 영어권 헤겔르네상스는 영어권헤겔학파의 등장으로 이해할 수 있다.
