Recently, more scholars have stared to consider Wittgenstein’s last notebooks, published under the title On Certainty, as his third masterpiece, because of its richness and originality compared to his previous his writings. In this background, the increasing interest in On Certainty has manifested itself in efforts at understanding not only the work itself, but also its relevance for the previous works in various fields of philosophy, including philosophy of religion. For example, Iakovos Vasiliou observes that although there is little explicit mention of religious belief in On Certainty, Wittgenstein’s remarks elsewhere about the nature of religious belief are most intelligible when read in light of that works. For this, Vasiliou scrutinizes some key concepts, particularly ‘world-picture’, ‘system of reference’ and ‘conversion’ which are fundamental to both On Certainty and Culture and Value. However Graham Gordon criticizes Vasiliou’s arguments, mainly pointing out identification of world-picture and system of reference. In this essay, I therefore aim to examine whether Vasiliou’s attempts are valid with a straightforward reading of the texts concerned. These results also contribute to suggest a better solution to the recent debates between Iakovos Vasiliou and Graham Gordon.

『확실성에 관하여』라는 제목으로 출판된 비트겐슈타인의 유고는 최근 들어서 『논리-철학 논고』와 『철학적 탐구』에 이어 그의 제3의 대표작으로 여겨지고 있다. 그 이유는 무엇보다도 생애 마지막 순간까지 비트겐슈타인이 직접 쓴 텍스트일 뿐 아니라, 이전시기와 구별되는 독창적이고 통일성을 갖춘 주제들을 다루는 완성도 높은 작품이기 때문이다. 이런 배경에서 최근 연구자들 사이에 증가하고 있는 『확실성에 관하여』에 대한 관심도 텍스트 자체에 대한 이해뿐만 아니라, 비트겐슈타인의 전체 철학 안에서의 이 작품의 위치뿐 아니라 다양한 주제와 관련해서 이전 작품과의 연속성과 불연속성에 관한 연구로까지 다양하게 펼쳐지고 있다. 이러한 움직임은 비트겐슈타인의 종교철학에 관한 연구에서도 예외는 아니다. 대표적인 사례로, 야코보스 바실리우는 「종교적 믿음에 관한 강의」와 『문화와 가치』에 나타난 종교적 믿음에 관한 흩어진 언급들은 『확실성에 관하여』의 조명아래에 읽었을 때 가장 잘 이해할 수 있다는 제안을 한다. 이를 위해 바실리우는 『확실성에 관하여』 그리고 『문화와 가치』에 공통적으로 중요한 핵심 개념들, 특별히 ‘세계상’, ‘준거 체계’, ‘개종’ 등의 핵심 개념을 면밀하게 검토한다. 하지만 고든 그레이엄은 특별히 바실리우가 주장한 세계상과 준거체계의 동일화의 문제점을 지적하면서 그를 비판한다. 따라서 이 논문에서는 관련된 텍스트를 엄격하게 분석함으로써 바실리우의 시도의 타당성을 검토할 것이다. 그리고 그 결과는 바실리우와 그레이엄 사이의 논쟁을 평가하고 더 나은 해석 방법을 찾는데 기여할 것이다.
