The main purpose of this paper is to suggest that, King can not only maintain the coherence of her theory of Goal Attainment, but enhance the applicability to the reality in the practical field, when she accepts Dewey’s notion of transaction without distorting it. King’s model of transaction focuses on ‘perceptual accuracy’ between a nurse and a client, giving no room for human emotion. I argue that this should set a limitation to King’s theory in practical nursing care. If King adjusts her notion of ‘transaction’ as comprehending ‘imagination’ and ‘continuity’ as Dewey did, her theory can get rid of the rigid notion ‘accuracy’ which is based on the notion of nurse and patient as ‘fixed beings’ without emotion. With this change, the relationship between a nurse and a client will shift to that of ‘cooperation’ among organic beings. I suggest that the cooperative relationship between nurse and client through organic transaction as well as continuity may comprehend each other’s experience not through perceptual accuracy but through ‘empathy’. King needs to accept the principle of continuity and imagination to make her theory of goal attainment better work in providing practical nursing care.

이 논문의 주된 목적은 킹이 경험적 자연주의를 주창한 듀이의 교호작용 개념을 왜곡하지 않고 수용할 때 그녀의 이론적 정합성을 유지할 수 있을 뿐만 아니라 목표달성 이론의 현실 적용 가능성을 열어 줄 수 있다고 제안하는 데 있다. 킹의 교호작용 모형은 간호사와 대상자 간의 ‘지각의 일치’에 초점을 맞추고 있기 때문에 감정이 들어설 자리가 없다는 점에서 실제적 간호 돌봄이 제한된다. 킹이 듀이의 교호작용과 연결되어 있는 연속성과 ‘상상력’ 개념을 수용하여 자신의 이론을 조정한다면, 그녀의 이론은 간호사와 대상자의 일치의 관계에서 벗어나 ‘협력’의 관계로 전환될 수 있을 것이다. 일치적 관계는 간호사와 대상자의 어떠한 감정도 개입되지 않는 ‘고정된 존재’로 설정하는 반면, 협력적 관계는 양자를 ‘유기적 존재’로 간주한다. 반면, 유기적 교호작용과 연속성에 의해 존립하는 간호사와 대상자 간의 협력적 관계는 지각의 일치가 아니라 ‘감정이입’을 통해 서로의 경험을 공유한다. 킹이 연속성의 원리와 상상력을 수용할 때, 그녀의 목표달성 이론은 실제적 간호 돌봄을 제공하는 데 더 유용한 이론으로 작동할 수 있을 것이다.
