It is asserted that normative ethical theory should be able to show the system of moral principle and rules that we can refer to when deciding what to have to do or not to do. Virtue ethics has been criticized that it can not become to be a normative ethical theory, because it does not provide the system of moral principles and rules. My essay is aimed at the objection to this criticism. Virtue ethics is able to show a system of moral principle and rules. The moral principle that virtue ethics is based on is found in the object of moral and the principle of human good that virtue ethics is supposing. Moral rules are able to be derived or justified by the principle of human good. And virtues itself is presupposing rules of virtue, that is moral rules. Virtue ethics is appropriate as a normative ethical theory, besides it tells us something more. Lists of virtue in virtue ethics include the representation of moral duties and the representation of moral ideals that transcend duties. Virtue ethics requires the dutiful and the supererogatory to be included in moral conduct. When virtue ethics is reconstructed as the moral theory that comprehends dutiful ethics and supererogatory ethics, virtue ethics will be able to become a better normative ethical theory.

규범 윤리 이론은 어떤 상황에서도 우리가 그것을 참고함으로써 무엇을 해야 하고, 하지 말아야 할 것을 결정할 수 있는 도덕 원리와 규칙의 체계를 제공할 수 있어야 한다고 주장된다. 덕윤리는 도덕 원리와 규칙의 체계를 제공하지 않기 때문에 규범 윤리 이론이 되지 못한다는 비판이 있어 왔다. 이글의 목적은 이러한 비판에 대한 반론을 위한 것이다. 덕윤리는 도덕 원리와 규칙의 체계를 제공할 수 있다. 덕윤리가 기초하는 도덕 원리는 덕윤리가 가정하고 있는 도덕의 목적, 인간 선의 원리에서 발견된다. 도덕 규칙들은 인간 선의 원리에서 도출되거나 정당화될 수 있다. 그리고 덕들은 자체 내에 덕의 규칙, 즉 도덕 규칙들을 전제하고 있다. 나아가 덕윤리는 규범 윤리 이론으로서 타당할 뿐 아니라, 그 이상을 말하고 있다. 덕윤리에서의 덕의 목록은 도덕적 의무를 표현하는 것과 의무를 넘어선 도덕적 이상을 표현하는 것이 포함되어 있다. 덕윤리는 도덕적 행위에 의무적인 것과 그 이상의 것이 포함되기를 요구한다. 덕윤리는 의무 도덕과 의무 이상의 도덕을 포괄하는 도덕이론으로서 구성될 때, 더 나은 규범 윤리 이론이 될 수 있다.
