This paper discusses the shifting networks of newcomer Korean female migrants in Japan, focusing on their changing form and function as mechanism of their career mobility. It argues that limited or structuralized networks for migrant women no longer work for recent Korean female migrants since they tend to build their new networks or bring their networks from the home country in the process of migration. For the argument, the current research also examines the process of network building in the context of Korean women’s three stages of career development: recruitment, maintenance and expansion, and circulation. It underscores the importance of understanding the diversified and changed function of specific social networks. The findings show that the social networks of Korean women, who moved to Japan in the 1980s and 1990, are concentrated in the localized ethnic networks. On the other hand, these networks have shifted in a sense that Korean women who moved later in the 2000s have engaged in competitive professional networks regardless of ethnicity and gender. Furthermore, the most recent wave of Korean migrants conducts transnational cooperative networks that they access and expand across the globe, which support their career in the global labor market.

본 연구는 일본에 거주하는 한인 고학력/고숙련 여성 노동자의 네트워크 형태와 기능을 경력이동 메커니즘으로 살펴보았다. 일본 거주 한인 여성(87명)의 인터뷰 결과를 분석해 본 결과, 네트워크 구축에 변화가 있음을 알 수 있었다. 종래에 언급 되어 온 호스트사회를 기반으로 한 제한적이거나 구조화된 한인 이주여성의 네트워 크는 최근에 이동한 한인 여성들에게 더는 적용되지 않는 형태라는 사실을 확인할 수 있었다. 이를 설명하기 위하여 한국 여성 경력개발의 3단계 (채용, 유지 및 확 장, 순환)의 맥락에서 네트워크 구축을 고찰하였다. 그 결과 1980년대와 1990년대 에 일본으로 이주한 한국 여성들의 네트워크는 지역화된 민족 네트워크에 집중되어 있음을 보여주었고, 2000년대에 이주한 여성들은 인종과 성별과 관계없이 경쟁적 인 전문 네트워크 구축에 집중되어 있었다. 특히 최근 이주한 여성들은 글로벌 노 동시장에 접근하고 확장하기 위한 초국가 협력 네트워크를 활용하고 있었다. 이러 한 분석을 통해 호스트사회 내에서의 제한된 형태와 기능에 초점이 맞추어져 있었 던 이주여성의 네트워크 범위가 모국과 거주국뿐만 아니라 다양한 국경을 넘나드는 초국가적인 형태로 확장되어 여성의 경력에 긍정적인 영향을 끼치고 있다는 사실을 확인하였다.
